  • Alex Has The Answer

    Dan Stevens|Mar 3, 2021

With 8.9 seconds remaining in their conference rematch at home against Orangeville, the Lena-Winslow Panthers were tied at 38-38, but Orangeville had possession of the ball after a Panther turnover. With the defense playing in man, Alex Daughenbaugh was straight up against Orangeville point guard Brayden Cahoon. "I knew he liked to hesitate for a quick second when he went right before he crossed over to the left, so I was waiting for him to go right," said Daughenbaugh. When the move came, Daugh...

  • Hughes Pulls A Coatney

    Dan Stevens|Mar 3, 2021

Last year, during the Sectional Championship game, Natalie Hughes was sitting in the stands with some West Carroll teammates when Lydia Coatney hit the last second shot that won the game for the Eastland Cougars. Tuesday night in Lanark, now in an Eastland jersey herself, Hughes got the ball with six seconds to play after Amboy had just tied the game at 49-49. "We had a time out, but there was no way you can set up a last second shot against their defense, they're too good," said head coach Nico...

  • Evan Almighty

    Dan Stevens|Mar 3, 2021

Lena-Winslow's new transfer student, Evan England, proved he can do just about anything. He may not like it ... for example he hates doing the quotient rule for a derivative in Calculus class ... but he can still do it. Wednesday night in Lena, England put on a show that was almost impossible to believe, even for those who saw it. With good defenders in his face, he lit up the Scales Mound Hornets for 20 points in the first half! "I watched him on tape, and I never saw him do anything like...

  • Doing The Dirty Work

    Dan Stevens|Mar 3, 2021

When Girls Basketball fans think about the Stockton Blackhawks, they usually think about Tiana Timpe. But as proven Thursday night against a young but improving West Carroll squad, Stockton is much more than Timpe. "Tiana is what makes us go," said head coach Robyn Schulz. "The girls know that, and they're happy when she gets her points and scores. But you look at Kirsten Winters, Brynn Haas, Kassadie (Sullivan) and the rest, they're the ones who get the rebound, or make the steal; they're...

  • Breakdown In Basics

    Dan Stevens|Mar 3, 2021

Every kid who has ever played basketball will remember some of the key lessons their coaches would preach to them. Call them basketball basics, and one of the main ones was to always keep your feet on defense. Friday night in Warren, the Warriors forgot that axiom as they repeatedly feel for head fakes from Sam Hesselbacher and Ethan Hefel, only to go flying up into the air, allowing the ball handler to simply pivot back, or step through and have an uncontested five foot jumper. The other key le...

  • Vaccinate Initiative

    Mar 3, 2021

Elizabeth resident Brenda Wand-Ertmer and her daughter, Breanne (residing in Texas) had a challenging time, but each successfully booked a COVID-19 vaccine appointment for family members through the Jo Daviess County Health Department website on the first presale date, January 25. It was through this experience that Ertmer and her daughter discussed how they could help other seniors without a computer or internet access in their community sign up for a vaccine appointment. And it is through this discussion that the Vaccinate Elizabeth...

  • The Lighter Side

    Mar 3, 2021

Pick Up Lines You may, or may not, want to use ... Dang girl, are you my appendix? Because I don't understand how you work, but this feeling in my stomach makes me want to take you out. Hey, my name is Microsoft. Can I crash at your place tonight? Are you a camera? Because every time I look at you I smile. Do you have a sunburn, or are you always this hot? Well, here I am! What are your other two wishes? I should call you Google, because you have everything I'm looking for. I'm not actually this tall, I'm just sitting on my wallet. I know...

  • National Nutrition Month

    Mar 3, 2021

March is National Nutrition Month, and the University of Illinois Extension and 4-H have a fun opportunity to enhance youth cooking skills. When it comes to nutrition and health, there is no one-size-fits-all approach. We are putting together educational cooking kits designed to inspire the inner chef, help youth gain confidence while working in the kitchen, and educate youth about healthful eating plans. This project is ideal for families to work on together or for youth with cooking...

  • Trying To Avoid The Mud Pit

    Dan Stevens|Mar 3, 2021

With the shortened seasons and schedules for High School sports that were made in order to even allow sports to take place, a brand new dilemma was suddenly imposed upon schools as they realized that the first home football games are only three weeks away. How do you play the games without completely destroying your field? Schools throughout the region have been trying to deal with the issue. Some are contacting artificial turf fields – asking if they can schedule their home games on them. Lena-...

  • Preacher's Piece

    Kevin Cernak|Mar 3, 2021

People who wonder if the glass is half empty or half full miss the point. The glass is refillable. Today’s column is dedicated to the characters who stand out in my life. When I was a kid, for reasons I never inquired about, my parents befriended a criminal. His name was Jim. I remember we prayed for him on a regular basis. He was in jail at the time and when he got released, the whole family rode in our station wagon to the jailhouse to pick him up. Dad went in the front door of the jail and r...

  • Point To Ponder

    Dan Stevens|Mar 3, 2021

The other night, my wife and I had some time to ourselves, and a Texas Roadhouse gift card to use, so we made our way into Rockford to enjoy a meal together. We’ve never been to the Rockford restaurant, for a variety of reasons, but enjoyed the meal, and I was touched by how the wait staff all seemed to be friends as they covered for each other and shared smiles in passing. So I made it a point to ask to see the manager. When she came over, I told her that I wanted to make it a point to c...

  • Your Voices

    Mar 3, 2021

Dan; I read your column and couldn't read it well because I couldn't see the page for the tears welling up in my eyes......and then my friend called and asked if I had read it and we both laughed over it again. Well, later in the day I was doing my Bible reading of five chapters a day in the Old Testament and five chapters in the New Testament in the LIVING version this year. You need to read Deuteronomy 23:13. That is where I was reading, no lie, that day and couldn't help but think of your article. Too funny... check it out …. Love to r...

  • Chesney Files Bill To Eliminate FOID Cards

    Mar 3, 2021

Calling them an "unnecessary hurdle for law-abiding citizens", State Representative Andrew Chesney (R-Freeport) announced he filed House Bill 1770 (HB 1770) in the Illinois House to repeal the Firearm Owners Identification (FOID) Card Act. Illinois is currently only one of four states which requires residents pay the State to obtain permission to exercise their Constitutional right to bear arms. Chesney's bill proposes to eliminate the law which requires the possession of a valid FOID card to le...
