  • Turning Yellow Into Gold

    Dan Stevens|Oct 20, 2021

In practice the Monday before their conference battle with Pecatonica, junior Middle, Leah Baker turned her ankle – forcing a major lineup change for the Orangeville Broncos. "With Leah out, I had to move from Right side to Middle," said senior Samantha Mock. "And we put Laney Cahoon over at right side." So basically, they lost an experienced junior, and tried to replace her with a freshman who had not seen much varsity action in the form of Delaney Cahoon. To say it caused issues, would have be...

  • Lady Wolves Have Become A Pack

    Dan Stevens|Oct 20, 2021

Pearl City was always dangerous on the volleyball court. With Savanah Brandt as one of the biggest hitters in the area, nobody could look past them ... but few teams seriously worried about them either. But all of that changed Wednesday night in Pearl City as the Wolves played their best match of the season – demonstrating true team cohesion – as they blew past an excellent Dakota squad 25-19, 25-22. "This is what we've been working towards for the last four years," said Savanah Brandt. "Ha...

  • Bigger Than Sports

    Dan Stevens|Oct 20, 2021

The Stockton Lady Blackhawks played host to the Warren Warriors Thursday night for their annual "Pink Night". Just about every area team has one during the season, and it is meant to promote Breast Cancer Awareness, and often includes fund raisers to battle cancer. But for the Blackhawks and Warriors – who co-op in softball and track – it got very real just two weeks ago when it was learned that Stockton Athletic Director, Boys Basketball Coach and teacher, John Hamman, revealed that he is goi...

  • There Was Also A Game

    Dan Stevens|Oct 20, 2021

The football game between the Lena-Winslow Panthers and Stockton Blackhawks in Stockton Friday night didn't kick off until 7:30 – but that was okay. More people were interested in the pregame celebrations anyway. Prior to the contest, the 2020 State Champion Pantherhawk wrestlers were all introduced and given their championship rings. It made perfect sense, after all, the two schools co-op together to become the Pantherhawks, and not only were the current students honored, but almost all of t...

  • Still Looking For Answers

    Dan Stevens|Oct 20, 2021

The Linda Ludwig Tournament held at Eastland was – to put it bluntly – loaded. With a ten team field that only had two teams with losing records on the season, the competition was going to be brutal. Especially when you saw some of the potential match ups. You had Rock Falls, who was the hands down favorite as a 2A power, but also had local powers like Aquin, Eastland, Durand, Milledgeville and Stockton to go along the team everybody wanted to see in order to make comparisons – Sterling Newman....

  • Preacher's Piece

    Kevin Cernak|Oct 20, 2021

I had some goodwill items to drop off the other day. The goodwill place was a hub of activity when I arrived and I had to wait in line for a few minutes before I could make my drop. There was one guy in a pickup that must have had 25 boxes of stuff to carry in. He and one of the attendants worked steadily at getting everything inside. There was a lady in a vehicle behind him who got tired of waiting and took her one bag to the door and left it. She then got back into her vehicle and put it in...

  • Point To Ponder

    Dan Stevens|Oct 20, 2021

They say you can’t teach an old dog new tricks. The other phrase that pops up is how “We are creatures of habit.” But last week, I ventured into new territory. You see, I needed a haircut. On a fairly regular basis, when I begin to get strange looks from my speech kids, or when my wife takes one look and points out that I am once again resembling a Koala Bear on Crack because of my shaggy head … I take the hint and look to get my hair cut. At the risk of placing an advertorial plug – but I thi...

  • The Lighter Side

    Oct 20, 2021

My boss told me to have a good day ... so I went home. The best way to criticize my boss is very, very quietly so he can't even hear you. I was told I needed to be more productive in the office, so I'm working on my resume. I'd tell my boss to go jump in the lake, but he'd probably just delegate that to me. I never used to believe in life after death, but after you left yesterday to go to your uncle's funeral, he came here into the office looking for you. I asked if I could leave work early the other day, and my boss said, "Sure, if I made up...

  • Happy Birthday Brayden

    Dan Stevens|Oct 20, 2021

Most kids would love to get a car for their eighteenth birthday, and while we have no idea what he actually got, Orangeville's Brayden Cahoon smoked past the Amboy defense as if he was behind the wheel Saturday as the Broncos rolled to the 55 – 6 victory to improve to 7-1 on the season. Orangeville already had a 7-0 lead midway through the first period when Carson Rote went back to pass, saw Cahoon behind the defender and threw a pass that the Bronco senior hauled in at the 30, then bolted u...

It’s hard to say who did it considering everyone has a motive. Reginald (Oliver Petta)? Major (Dylan Olvera)? Alexis (Sidney Wright)? Bernie (Cody Pitts)? Eileen (Kady Miller)? • Democrats Giving Criminals Second Tries Rather Than Second Chances

    Oct 20, 2021

State Representative Andrew Chesney (R-Freeport) didn't waste any time, along with his Republican counterparts, in panning action taken by Illinois House Democrats in making appointments to the Public Safety & Violence Task Force as an "attempt by Democrats to provide cover for the terrible pro-criminal policies they have enacted over the past year." Despite Chesney's appointment to serve on said Task Force, he criticized its recently "un-idled" status as, "nothing more than cover for Democrats...

  • State Rep's Report

    Andrew Chesney|Oct 20, 2021

It seems that politicians often forget that the money they are spending comes from you, the hardworking families of Illinois. The process by which legislators negotiate how to spend finite taxpayer resources should be based on public policy outcomes and not political considerations. Illinois residents can see evidence their state government is operating unethically by simply reading their newspaper. With that in mind, I proposed legislation to tackle unethical behavior and ensure our elected...
