  • Your Voices

Dan Stevens, I just have a few concerns and questions. These people in charge of County Board strike me no different than the bunch when Blum was in charge. Oh, what about the airport hanger rental deal? Hi Marge! They are gone. What about Sol DeTente and his bunch? They were the ??? Bunch, I have forgot. I offer no quick fix or any solution. But, here’s the question, several years ago the Nursing Center had a large surplus of money. They even offered to move some of that money to help out the county. I believe I am correct on that. I am v...

  • Preacher's Piece

    Kevin Cernak|Aug 16, 2023

We have a kill-deer that built a nest right on the edge of our driveway, about a foot in from where the gravel meets the grass. Everytime I mowed the yard, the mama would squawk and squawk and try to lead me away by playing the broken wing trick. I looked and looked for her nest, hoping that I wouldn’t mow over it and ruin it and break the chain of life in nature. Then one day, when I was looking out the window I saw her sitting on the nest and took note of its location. When I went out there s...

  • Point To Ponder

    Dan Stevens|Aug 16, 2023

Here’s a small test. Right now, could you quote the six most dangerous words when put together in a sentence? Now, I’m sure some people will immediately think of the obvious: “We Are Going To Declare War” But, they would be wrong. You see, “we” don’t really have any control when it comes to a declaration of war. Congress handles that, and we all know how much sway the everyday man has with Congress. So, even though – yes – that could lead to an outbreak of war and the destruction of the world as...

  • On The Record

    Aug 16, 2023

Crash With Injury On August 5, 2023, at approximately 10:55 am, the Jo Daviess County Sheriff’s Office 911 Dispatch Center received a report of a one vehicle motorcycle crash on West Council Hill Road approximately 1.5 miles west of North Jewell Lane, Scales Mound. Chad D. Renton, 51 of Rockford, was driving his black 2007 Harley-Davidson motorcycle westbound on West Council Hill Road when he lost control as he was attempting to negotiate a sharp right-turning corner in the roadway. Renton’s motorcycle then crashed on its side and skidded off...

  • Lighter Side

    Aug 16, 2023

Give a man a fish and he eats for a day. Teach him how to fish and he can avoid his wife for a whole weekend. Two fish walk into a bar … Well, they don’t walk, but you know – wait, I’ll start over. They call him 007 … 0 bites, 0 fish, 7 hours. OK Nemo, he’s almost to the car. Fifty bucks says I can bring him back here with one splash of my tail. Sex is great, but fishing lasts all day. There was a big fight at the seafood restaurant … three fish got battered. I’m a life saver. I rescue fish from water, and beer from bottles. Lord, allow me to c...

  • Lena Yard Of The Month

    Aug 16, 2023

There is no complicated science or detailed logic when it comes to flowers in the yard of Lynn Haight at 512 Quail Drive. She has the simple philosophy of "When I find something I like, I put it in!" The end result has produced a gorgeous setting which was chosen by the Lena Beautification Committee as July's Yard of the Month. Haight said that her love of flowers came from her mother who shared the same fondness. A flower box filled with geraniums at the front door has been the traditional...

  • Bunker Awarded Highest Honor In Wisconsin

    Dan Stevens|Aug 16, 2023

Everyone in Lena knows the strength and tradition of the Lena-Winslow football team. And residents are also very familiar with Louis Bunker – the owner of Stump Busters who has ground out a stump on almost every block within the village limits. But what most people may not be aware of, was what "might have been." You see, Louie had a son, Isaac, who was more than a bit gifted when it comes to athletics. As a teenager, Isaac grew to stand 6'4" and weight 280 pounds, with the quickness and athleti...

    Victoria Hansen|Aug 16, 2023

One thing you may not know about me is I love lists! I am often sucked into reading lists about travel, food, famous people the topics are endless. But my favorite list to read each month is “How did Farm Bureau serve our members”? • Wildcats Claim Eastland Tournament

    Dan Stevens|Aug 16, 2023

In Volleyball, the first major tournament that gives everyone a good idea of where the power is in the North is the Oregon Tournament. But in Golf, the first solid look into which golf teams are people going to be chasing after is the Eastland Tournament at Lake Carroll. But never have the results seemed to ask more questions than they answered. Both RR/SM and Fulton were seen as major contenders for top honors, but when the top four golf scores from each team were scored – the two teams were st...

  • From The Desk Down State

    Andrew Chesney|Aug 16, 2023

What would happen to your family budget if you doubled your spending over a six-year period? I think we all know it would be an unsustainable and irresponsible path that leads to a lot of credit card debt and an eventual fiscal cliff. Yet that is exactly what your state government has done with the General Fund and other state and federal budget funds since Governor JB Pritzker took office. Between Fiscal Year 2018 and Fiscal Year 2024 (current year), state government appropriations have...
