  • An Unfair Fight

    Dan Stevens|Feb 5, 2020

Over the summer, there was a lot of excitement over what kind of game fans would see when Lena-Winslow, and the Mapes sisters, squared off against the Stockton Blackhawks – their former team. But when the day finally arrived Monday night, injuries had taken such a large toll, that the battle was over before it even began as Stockton cruised to the 59-38 victory. Lena-Winslow was without their leading point guard, Madilyn Schultz – and had been for a month. Sadie Mowerey, her replacement, was...

  • The Mouse That Roared

    Dan Stevens|Feb 5, 2020

The program officially lists Andy Wurster as being 5'8" tall. We think it's lying. But the one thing that nobody can deny is how hard and fast the senior guard works for the River Ridge Wildcats. "I know he's going to go out there and go 110% all the time. It's the only speed he knows," said head coach Shean Albrecht. "That's why you see him pulling himself out all of the time. He can't keep up with his own pace." After mounting a furious comeback from ten points down in the final three minutes...

  • The Great Talent Divide

    Todd Nielsen|Feb 5, 2020

The gap in talent has never been wider than it is right now amongst the girls basketball teams in the NUIC. There are quite a few great to very good teams and quite a few teams experiencing lows with not a whole lot of teams in between. River Ridge-Scales Mound (RRSM) is one of those teams experiencing lows right now as there isn't a wealth of talent among the upperclassmen on Dave Wiegel's team. Stockton, on the other hand, has four strong starters, three of which were key players on their...

  • A Dakota Dismantling

    Dan Stevens|Feb 5, 2020

After winning the jump ball to open the game, the Lena-Winslow Panthers came down and worked their offense for a good twenty seconds before Sean Ormiston pulled up and hit a 15 foot jumper for the 2-0 lead. That was the extent of the Lena-Winslow highlights. Evan Flynn nailed a three point basket the first time the Indians had the ball, and claimed a lead they would never relinquish. This was Dakota vs Lena – this was hard nosed defensive in-your-face basketball that needed overtime the first t...

  • Now It Gets Serious

    Dan Stevens|Feb 5, 2020

The Wrestling post season gets underway this coming weekend where the teams from our region will be making the trip to Polo for the Class 1A Regional. And to say that a lot will be on the line would be a massive understatement. Two different things will be taking place at the Regional. On the one hand, the individual wrestlers will be battling it out to finish among the top four in order to advance on to the Sectional at Oregon. The field is loaded, so advancing will not be easy as eleven teams...

  • From The Desk Down State

    Brian Stewart|Feb 5, 2020

Governor J.B. Pritzker painted a rosy picture in his first “State of the State” address January 29, but Senate Republican lawmakers say a greater emphasis should have been placed on rooting out corruption, starting with revamping the state’s process for drawing legislative maps. Senate Republicans reacted to Governor Pritzker’s first official “State of the State” address, delivered to a joint session of Illinois lawmakers January 29 in the House of Representatives Chambers, noting that the Go...

  • Preacher's Piece

    Kevin Cernak|Feb 5, 2020

(Forgive me if I’ve told this one before) … But … one dark night outside a small town in the midwest, a fire started inside the local chemical plant, and in a blink of an eye it exploded into massive flames. The alarm went out to all the fire departments for miles around. When the volunteer firefighters appeared on the scene, the chemical company president rushed to the fire chief and said, “All of our secret formulas are in the vault in the center of the plant. They must be saved. I will gi...

  • Point To Ponder

    Dan Stevens|Feb 5, 2020

I hear a lot of things first. People send me emails, or tips on what they think is newsworthy, and a lot of times it is – so I look into it or try to help promote what’s happening. And admittedly there are a lot of times where the concern they had was misplaced. A ton of things I find out early never make it into print. There are a ton of reasons for this too – sometimes it is because there is no reason to print it, just diggin into some things has resulted in changes taking place. Other times...

  • State Rep's Report

    Andrew Chesney|Feb 5, 2020

Expect the drum beat on ethics reform to continue at the State Capitol as more legislators become embroiled in what is now apparently a web of corruption being unwoven by President Trump's Federal Department of Justice. While Governor Pritzker attempted to lay out his annual priorities to legislators in his State of the State speech at the end of January, the cloud of corruption and indictments dogged the Democrat Governor in delivering his second annual address the same week as it was...
