  • Support At Your Own Risk

    Dan Stevens|Apr 19, 2023

As reported within our pages, there was a major controversy last year in regard to the Taste Of Lena – specifically with how the group LASER (Lena Area Special Event Runners) had asked the Lena Lions Club to sponsor and run the event, but then "stole" it by having patrons write checks out to LASER and not the Lions, and then refusing to let the Lions even see the books, let alone make sure the profits from the event went back to support the Lena community. Leaders Ron Fluegel and Sue S...

  • Voices NCAA Winners

    Apr 19, 2023

Congratulations go out to James Whitson of Freeport who was the only one to pick UConn to win the NCAA Tournament, making him the winner of our contest. Russ Townsend of Freeport finished in second, he had UConn making the finals against Duke. Third place was tough because three different people had UConn in the final four, so we had to see what separated them. The winner of third place goes to Melinda Bond – she edged out Cal Wescott and Mark Townsend thanks to correctly picking Creighton to reach the elite eight. Final results were: 1. J...

  • Preacher's Piece

    Kevin Cernak|Apr 19, 2023

About three weeks ago we had 15 inches of snow. As I type these words, we've now had a week of 80 degree weather. Looking ahead to what is now this week, it looks like the temps are going to drop about 25 degrees. I even see snow in the forecast. So, we go from 85 degrees to snow. Some people say, “what is going on with our weather. We’ve never had weather like this before.” Ah, but we have. Anyone who has spent any amount of time in the great outdoors and who has any kind of memory, can attest...

  • Point To Ponder

    Dan Stevens|Apr 19, 2023

My cousin Chuck and his wife let us know about six months ago that they are seriously looking at moving up here to the area. She retires at the end of May, and for an assortment of reasons, they got to the point where it was time to leave Champaign, Illinois. Anyway, both my wife and I offered the use of our house – we have the spare rooms – and to make a long story short, Chuck came up last Monday to begin...

The latest innovation in office safety is an airbag that activates when your computer crashes so you won’t hurt your head banging it on the desk in frustration. Uhhh, my computer just told me I need to upgrade my brain to be compatible with its’ new software. “How do you think my first day of Kindergarten went?” snapped Johnny at his grandma. “They didn’t even have wifi.” I’m sure this website is safe. As an extra measure of security, they make you sign in with your Social Security number, mother’s maiden name, your bank account, home add...
