  • We're Getting New Stuff

    Dan Stevens|Jul 26, 2023

With the Nursing Home put on the back burner as the Stephenson County Board waits for Upward Care – the firm interested in possibly purchasing Walnut Acres – to complete their due diligence, the Board actually got to attend to other business at their July meeting. The State of Illinois mandates pay increases for the State’s Attorney, Public Defender and the Sheriff – but the increases carry a reimbursement to the county from the state – so all of the mandated increases were approved. But in ad...

  • Preacher's Piece

    Kevin Cernak|Jul 26, 2023

We had some people visit our church a few months ago who live about 40 miles away. After the service we were chatting in the parking lot and the husband told me they’d love to come to Martintown, except “it’s just too far away.” My response was: “It’s not too far away. We have people who travel 50 miles or more every week to get here.” I didn’t even remember making that comment until he reminded me of it the day they joined in membership a few months later. He said he went home and thought abo...

  • Point To Ponder

    Dan Stevens|Jul 26, 2023

I’ve always been a collector. From models, to diecast cars, to coins, to stamps, to football cards, I’ve gathered a lot of favorites over the years. And with so many interests, that meant additional collections. I went through the Hot Wheels phase back when I was young. And when my great aunt died and the family had to go through her house to help clean it out, both my brother and I got interested in stamp collecting after finding so many old issues in her desk. When I turned ten, football becam...

  • Lighter Side

    Jul 26, 2023

It’s time to exercise again, but I’m still walking funny from my last workout. I do two hours of cardio every day. But I still need to find the closest parking spot to the gym. My doctor told me to start my exercise program very gradually. So, today, I drove past a store that sells sweat pants. I didn’t make it to the gym today. That makes it seven years in a row. I went for a run but came back after two minutes because I forgot something. I forgot that I’m out of shape and can’t run more than two minutes. Does running into the wine shop coun...

  • Hot Water's On The Way

    Dan Stevens|Jul 26, 2023

There is a massive difference between covering the Stephenson County Board and the Stockton Park District. While one strictly follows Roberts Rules of Order but spends countless hours arguing without any form of resolution, the other pays very little attention to Roberts, but actually got some things done at their July meeting. The biggest complaint in Stockton was that the heater on the pool was out. So, temperatures dropped at night to the point where people were swimming in 77 degree water te...

Lena-Winslow held their annual summer football camp for all students from 7 through 12 grade last week.
