  • Take Advantage Of What You Get

    Dan Stevens|Feb 10, 2021

There were no fans, no pep band, no smell of popcorn wafting through the air, no cheering parents, and not even a jump ball – but both Aquin and Eastland were more than thrilled that they finally got to play basketball Wednesday night in what turned out to be the opening game for the entire region in Girls Basketball. And while some first game mistakes were made, both teams put on quite a show as the Eastland Cougars took advantage of the opportunities they were given, while Aquin let too m...

  • The Lighter Side

    Feb 10, 2021

I'm spending Valentine's Day with my true love ... food. Women refer to it as Valentine's Day ... Men have another name for it ... Extortion Day. Valentine's Day is just a harsh reminder that I am forever alone. Valentine's Day was created because love isn't quite complicated enough as it is. Hey, if you don't have a Valentine on Valentine's Day, don't be sad ... Most people don't have Aids on World Aids Day either. I used to be sad on Valentine's Day because nobody loved me. But then I realized – nobody loves me on the other days of the year e...

  • Speech Regional Rout

    Feb 10, 2021

The numbers speak for themselves, while many teams felt they had figured out how to prepare a speech team during this Covid season, the Freeport Pretzels proved by dominating the Sterling Regional by the largest margin in IHSA history. There are fourteen speech events, and a student must finish in the top four to advance on to the Sectionals. To demonstrate the total domination of the Pretzels, they qualified 13 events, and claimed ten first place Regional titles in the process, with two second...

  • Preacher's Piece

    Kevin Cernak|Feb 10, 2021

A friend of mine bought his wife a world map and gave her a dart and said, throw this, and wherever it lands - that’s where I’m taking you when this pandemic ends. It turns out that they will be spending two weeks behind the fridge. This past Tuesday I had a toothache so I went to the dentist. I said: “I think I have an abscessed tooth.” He took x rays and said: “You gave yourself a proper diagnosis, you’re going to need a root canal.” I said: “Thank you. I’ve been diagnosing my own illnesses fo...

  • Point To Ponder

    Dan Stevens|Feb 10, 2021

My wife is really excited right now … I guess I better back-track a little here. You see, last Friday the Athletic Directors of the NUIC all got together to formalize schedules because High School basketball is finally going to begin - last week for many, and this week for everybody else – it all comes down to having the mandated seven practices in before the games can actually start. Anyway, while the issue of fans is still up in the air with requirements of no more than 50 people, and bei...
