  • As One Goes Down, Another Returns

    Dan Stevens|Feb 2, 2022

Most people know that the Scales Mound Hornets are a really strong basketball team and ranked #2 in the state in 1A. But few people outside of the small town of Scales Mound realize how truly impressive that is because of one little known fact ... they haven't played at full strength since the second day after Christmas. Last Saturday, when traveling across the border to play Dubuque Senior – a school with over 1600 students compared to the Hornets who have a total student population of 75 in th...

  • Overcoming Covid Restrictions

    Dan Stevens|Feb 2, 2022

The Orangeville Lady Broncos were faced with a bit of a dilemma. Their JV team had been exposed to covid when they played RR/SM, and several of those players also suit up for varsity. But due to their exposure, the Broncos went into their conference battle at Pearl City with only six players. Six. But Pearl City also had a problem. Normally, when facing an opponent with little to no bench, the standard strategy is to press them as much as possible to wear them down ... but Pearl City couldn't...

  • Stockton Gives Warren A Dustin

    Dan Stevens|Feb 2, 2022

Throughout the first half of Wednesday night's conference battle in Stockton, the Blackhawks and Warren Warriors traded leads, fouls, turnovers and momentum, but nobody could take control of the game as it stood deadlocked at 17-17 going into halftime. But halftime is where adjustments are made. "They started using a triangle and two defense on us in the second quarter," said Stockton head coach John Hammann. "They were denying Ian (Broshous) the ball, and he usually creates for everybody else....

  • The Regionals Came Early

    Dan Stevens|Feb 2, 2022

Ask any basketball coach familiar with IHSA post season play, and they will admit that the post season games tend to be much more physical than the regular season because the officials want to "let them play". So, fouls are not called, and it can get more than a little rough. Well, Thursday night in Scales Mound, the Lady Wildcats and Cougars could have played "Call your own" fouls and everything would have been a LOT better. Players were getting slapped on a regular basis, or shoved out of...

  • Colder Than The Weather

    Dan Stevens|Feb 2, 2022

On paper, the game shouldn't have been close. But games aren't played on paper. The Lena-Winslow Panthers did just about everything they could to give a game away to the Dakota Indians Friday night, and Dakota finally accepted the gift in the fourth quarter to claim a huge 38-33 victory that made their season. How did it happen? Well, when your two leading scorers, who both average double figures are held to a grand total of four points in the game ... (two points each) you don't need to look ve...

  • Point To Ponder

    Dan Stevens|Feb 2, 2022
    1

It’s been an ugly 2022 already. Mask mandates that are inconsistent at best, and the whole Covid pandemic has everyone frustrated; area teams are lucky if they can actually play most of their games when they were scheduled; the cold weather isn’t helping matters any; and then our pocket books get hit by the inflation everyone is talking about on television but nobody seems to be doing anything to change it. Yes, there are plenty of reasons why 2022 will not be fondly remembered, but what too...

  • Winslow's Ice Rats

    Dan Stevens|Feb 2, 2022

Everybody would know what you meant if you called someone a gym rat, but ... what name would you give to kids who spend almost all of their free time outside on an ice rink playing hockey? John Leuenberger Jr. always loved hockey. And while he couldn't really play organized hockey as a kid, as a grown up, he made regular trips to Lena with his own kids to skate on the Lions Park rink the Jaycees used to maintain. "We spent a ton of time there, but living on a farm outside of Winslow, you kinda...

    Capital News Network|Feb 2, 2022

USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service final crop production estimates for 2021 confirm a bin-buster harvest. Corn production was estimated at 15.11 billion bushels (up 7% from 2020 and the second-largest on record) w...

  • Preacher's Piece

    Kevin Cernak|Feb 2, 2022

A few years ago we noticed that our church sign was getting kind of old and in need of some repairs. It had probably not been updated for about 20 years, other than to add names and change service times occasionally. Our church board thought we might want to put in a new digital sign instead of fixing up the old wood one. After checking with the county on setback requirements and getting a couple of prices, we decided not to do anything for now. Then came Covid and with Covid came parking lot...

  • The Lighter Side

    Feb 2, 2022

Some people have a backyard that is a sanctuary for relaxation and reflection … I’ve got a giant dog toilet that I have to mow. I think I might be living in the wrong neighborhood. As I was getting ready to go cut the grass, the Homeowners Association called to remind me there’s no shirtless lawnmowing for people past the age of 45. Of course we can afford it.
