  • Top Cats

    Dan Stevens|Jan 8, 2020

The most highly anticipated match up of the Girl's Basketball season turned into a one sided affair as the Eastland Cougars "stole" the victory from Aquin on the Bulldog's home floor 69-54. Coming into the game there was a question regarding how much Addie DeMichele would be able to play after she rolled her ankle earlier in the week, but the drama was overblown as DeMichele got plenty of minutes – scoring seven points in the game. "It's possible that Addie being hurt had something to do with th...

  • Too Many Obstacles To Overcome

    Dan Stevens|Jan 8, 2020

There was a lot of screaming going on in the Stockton Gymnasium Friday night ... but it wasn't the good kind. The Blackhawks and Pirates only meet one time before the Regional seed meeting, and with them now in the new NUIC West, this made for a pivotal contest that was incredibly important to both squads. The problems began with the men in stripes. They might be great guys, but they had a bad night ... really bad. A shot just before halftime that was still in the player's hands as the buzzer...

  • 2019 One Last Look

    Dan Stevens|Jan 8, 2020

4 is upon us, and while there are plenty of things to begin looking at in the upcoming decade, it is our tradition here at Village Voices to use the first issue of the new year to take a look back at the biggest stories that affected our local area the year before. We are not talking about the legalization of Marijuana, or any national level story, we only care about our local region – so with that being said, here's our list of the top ten stories from 2019. 1. Lost Loved Ones A lot of s...

  • 2019 The Year In Sports

    Dan Stevens|Jan 8, 2020

We saw state champions, school records, and even national records set in 2019 across the sports spectrum of activities, so what do we think were the top ten stories of 2019? Glad you asked. 1. Panther Football Dominance Winning the State Championship in football was not new for the Lena-Winslow Panthers. In fact, they had already done it three times in the past decade. But what made the 2019 Panthers the top sports story on this list was the manner in which they won. Simply put – domination w...

  • Warhawks Come Charging Back

    Jan 8, 2020

While area sports team still compete over the holiday break, local speech teams also competed last weekend at the Lena-Winslow/Orangeville Tournament. And while Rochelle dominated the meet with such a large team in attendance, the story of interest was the return of the Stockton/Warren Warhawks, and emerging of local stars who seem primed to make a deep post season run. Speech meet team points are awarded during the preliminary rounds, and teams get points for what their members do in those...

  • Point To Ponder

    Dan Stevens|Jan 8, 2020

I think I’ve finally figured it out. Technology is awesome these days – we can now get the internet on a hand held instrument, locate exactly where on the globe we are, and there’s no shortage to the list of things one pocket instrument can do. I actually laughed when a couple of kids saw an old 1960s Star Trek episode and commented, “This can’t be too old, look they’ve got flip phones.” But with all of the new advances, and all of the bigger, better, faster processors and chips and storage … wh...

  • Preacher's Piece

    Kevin Cernak|Jan 8, 2020

Happy 2020! A new year, a new decade, and great eyesight. Remember when Y2K was the big scare? Our computers were going to shut down. We weren’t going to be able to bank or buy gas or groceries. Our electricity was going to stop flowing. Certain people I knew stocked up on all kinds of supplies - even golf cart batteries because that was going to be their electrical supply until the rest of the world came back on the grid. Well that was 20 years ago - 7,305 days - each lived one day at a time. I...

    Jan 8, 2020

On Sunday, December 15th, Eastland High School student Cadin Colehour competed at the APF/AAPF Raw Power Challenge powerlifting meet that was held in Lombard, Illinois. Cadin, a junior who plays football, wrestles, and is a member of the track team, has been powerlifting for about a year and this was his third meet. The first event of the day was the squat. Cadin opened with 137.5kg and lifted that easily. His second attempt at 150kg was also successful. For his third attempt, Cadin tried for a...

  • State Rep's Report

    Andrew Chesney|Jan 8, 2020

It’s no secret that much of rural Illinois, the vast region of Illinois outside of Chicago and the collar counties, feels forgotten by Chicago democrats running Illinois when it comes to things like state spending priorities. We see these arguments play out every day at gas stations, coffee shops, and at nearly any gathering of rural residents throughout our state. If you live in rural Illinois, you probably even talked about it more than you’d care to admit this holiday season. However, the...
