  • Perseverance Pays Off

    Dan Stevens|Oct 18, 2023

The Pearl City Wolves haven’t been getting a lot of attention in the press lately, but don’t think for one minute everyone who follows area volleyball wasn’t noticing what was going on. First year coach, Tammy Stephen, was slowly but surely, making the Wolves believe. A team without a power hitter, and full of smart kids who were good athletes – but few pure volleyball players – wasn’t expected to compete in the powerful NUIC North. After all, the conference had three state ranked teams in it...

  • What Can't She Do?

    Dan Stevens|Oct 18, 2023

East Dubuque came into River Ridge Wednesday night looking like a M*A*S*H unit with three starters injured, and their best outside hitter done for the season. "Yeah, I brought three freshmen up, and we're trying to settle in on a new lineup, but we're focused on having fun the rest of the season," said head coach Ashley Sites. So, for all practical purposes, the match was one River Ridge needed to win comfortably. A back-and-forth see-saw affair would lead to more questions than answers. But...

  • Pyrrhic Victory

    Dan Stevens|Oct 18, 2023

The good news was that the Lena-Winslow Panthers continued to roll through the NUIC North with a straight set win over Orangeville on the road 25-14, 25-18. The bad news was sitting on a bleacher with an ice pack on her knee trying to fight back the tears. Mia Diffenderfer came down awkwardly early in game two and heard something pop in her knee. The normally stoic sophomore who would never show emotion whether she made a great play or a bad one, was suddenly fighting back tears – so you knew i...

  • Playoffs Started Early

    Dan Stevens|Oct 18, 2023

With five wins needed to qualify for the IHSA post season party, Friday's conference battle in Stockton between the Blackhawks and Dakota Indians became a playoff for the playoffs as both teams came in with identical 3-4 overall records. The loser would be eliminated, while the winner stayed alive with one week left in which they had to claim their fifth win. Squaring off were two traditional running teams. And with Mother Nature put her two cents in as well as the rain was pelting everyone all...

  • Preacher's Piece

    Kevin Cernak|Oct 18, 2023

There is a lot happening in the world today - mainly in Israel. Ever since I was a little kid, my parents had the radio on and I remember hearing about wars and battles taking place in the Middle East. I only remember the Six Day War in 1967, where Egypt attacked Israel and was quickly defeated, because I read about it in history. I was a young teenager in 1973 when the Yom Kippur War broke out. At that time, I remember hearing about The Golan Heights and the Sinai Peninsula and the Suez Canal...

  • Point To Ponder

    Dan Stevens|Oct 18, 2023

So why is it that we all love Halloween so much? I mean really, look around - people go bonkers over Halloween. Houses get decorated, people wear costumes, kids can’t wait to trick or treat, and I have to admit it’s one of my favorites - but I had to stop and wonder, why? This isn’t some stupid history lesson about Halloween, and how we got it, I’ve seen tons of those and when you get right down to it - does a kid care? And be honest, how many of you actually give a rotting bone about the his...

  • Lighter Side

    Oct 18, 2023

It’s a proven fact that after a black widow mates, it will immediately eat its ex. At least Taylor Swift just writes a song about you. Travis Kelce has had a lot of big catches in his career, but if he’s really dating Taylor Swift, that would be the biggest. I swear, if there is a new song by Taylor Swift next year about sacking football players and punting them from her life – I might be physically ill. I hope my new relationship lasts longer than Taylor Swift’s next five. Jason Kelce asked his All Pro brother, Tight End Travis Kelce of the...

Weller of the law firm of Elliott, Trainor & Weller, P.C. participated in the Leaders to Washington trip with the Illinois Farm Bureau to advocate for issues currently affecting the agriculture industry.
