  • Your Voices

    Aug 2, 2023

Editor; I look forward to Village Voices weekly. I truly appreciate the sports news. If ever you need something to write about, may I suggest the discrepancies in admission fees to games throughout the conference/area. I am so lucky that Pearl City has a senior fee of $1 for all games. I attend all home games which I wouldn’t do if it was a $4 fee as it is in some area schools. Having lived in the suburbs where my husband coached (and wives were on the pass list) I was aware of conference guidelines on admission fees for all schools. A few y...

  • One Man's Opinion

    Jim Sacia|Aug 2, 2023

The lady could not have been more pleasant. I saw her interview on Sunday, Jul 23, 2023. Just the day before, on Saturday, July 22, as many of us in the Pecatonica area were enjoying our yearly car show, “Cars On Main,” Donna Hansbrough, age 68, a 13 year employee of Lowes, a nation-wide chain of hardware goods, was attempting to stop thieves leaving her store with over $2,000 worth of merchandise. She got busted in the eye and knocked to the ground. That was humiliating enough. As fellow employ...

  • Preacher's Piece

    Kevin Cernak|Aug 2, 2023

A guy spots a sign outside a house that reads, “Talking Dog for Sale.” Intrigued, he walks in. “So, what have you done with your life?” he asks the dog. “I’ve led a very full life,” says the dog. “I lived in the Alps rescuing avalanche victims. Then I served my country in Iraq. And now, I spend my days reading at a retirement home.” The guy is flabbergasted, he turns to the owner and asks, “Why on earth would you want to get rid of a dog like that?” The owner says, “Because he’s a liar!...

  • Point To Ponder

    Dan Stevens|Aug 2, 2023

My life isn’t easy, and I know I’m not alone. For many of us, the constant pain and humiliation can wear you down to the point of not eating … okay, I haven’t gotten there yet. But that still doesn’t mean it hurts any less. Each year we fall prey to the hopes and dreams, the potential and possibilities … only to be sitting alone in our living room some fateful day in late January – the day known as the Super Bowl – the day every Minnesota Viking fan dreads. It’s not easy being a Viking fan, but...

  • Lighter Side

    Aug 2, 2023

What if this Climate Change stuff is all a big hoax. Then we’ll be making the world a better and safer place for nothing! I don’t think the government will declare a war on Climate Change. I mean, considering their war on drugs and war on poverty, they don’t have a good track record. They’re setting up a new Global Warming inaction monument on a single iceberg that was formerly known as “The Arctic”. Only in America do we accept weather predictions from a rodent on Ground Hog Day, but deny climate change evidence from scientists. Wait a minute,...

  • From The Desk Down State

    Andrew Chesney|Aug 2, 2023

Some of my favorite childhood memories involve trips to the county fair, and this time of year counties across Illinois are continuing their traditions of bringing people together for celebrations of community spirit. From hot dogs, lemon shake-ups, cotton candy, and funnel cakes, to livestock exhibits, carnival rides, concerts, and pageants, county fairs offer something for everyone. The centerpiece of county fairs is livestock exhibits and judging. In the months and sometimes years leading up...

  • The Week In Pictures

    Aug 2, 2023

A massive heat wave hampered attendance at the Stephenson County Fair, area sports teams had their last scrimmages and camps as the no-contact week takes place this week, but the biggest story - at least in Lena - was the storm that roared through Friday night - knocking down tress, doing lots of damage, and knocking out power for 16 hours or more depending on where you lived....
