Cannabis Is Coming

On January 1st of 2020, recreational use of marijuana will be legal in the State of Illinois. But the question that sparks is – where will people go to buy it, and how will the region benefit in terms of tax dollars?

To begin with, the license to be able to sell recreational marijuana is only awarded by the State itself. It is not like a liquor license where the individual municipalities control who gets one. In addition, the cost of getting the license if one is awarded is extremely expensive – we're talking in the high six figures here.
