  • What'cha Neighbors Up To?

    Aug 9, 2023

A local Mayor – okay, we’ll give him credit, it was new Lanark Mayor Mark Macomber – wondered if there was any way that local town governments we cover could submit simple – “what are we up to” notices that Village Voices would print. And, truth be told, we thought it was a great idea – so we emailed every community in our coverage area, and below is our first submission. Whenever any town mayor, or clerk, sends in information to us, we will include it as a regular item in the paper – kinda like Church News. It could be about a fund raiser lik...

  • County Putting Politics Over People

    Dan Stevens|Aug 9, 2023

It has been the center of controversy for years in Stephenson County, and has only gotten more contentious over time. But with the RFP proposal to potentially sell the Stephenson County Nursing Home, it is finally reaching a tipping point – but not the kind many people think. Before I begin, I need to express that I have no "skin" in the game. No relative of mine is a resident of Walnut Acres, and accusations made on social media of how the Voices has been "bought out and influenced" by the R...

  • Preacher's Piece

    Kevin Cernak|Aug 9, 2023

It seems time goes a little faster now than it used to. Back in my youth it seemed like once summer was upon us, it had no end. We would work and play for sunny days on end. I don’t ever remember keeping track of the days. Summer was endless. My dad had two farms back then, about 20 miles from each other. One was a dairy farm, which was where we lived. The other was a beef farm where dad had a herd of Black Angus cattle. Grandpa took care of the beef cows, while dad and mom and the rest of us l...

  • Point To Ponder

    Dan Stevens|Aug 9, 2023

No man who is married and has daughters can ever have too big of an ego … they simply won’t allow it. When they were little, I can still remember the girls and my wife talking about how they could play pin the nose on the pumpkin using my belly when I was dressed in an orange Freeport soccer flannel one day. But the worst was one night when I was sitting on the couch watching television and Caitlin began poking my belly and commented, “Wow, you poke it here and it jiggles all the way over there...

  • Lighter Side

    Aug 9, 2023

What is the similarity between a grandmother and a website? You can’t deny the cookies. My grandparents fought during World War II. That was a long time ago, maybe they didn’t have divorce back then. An hour with your grandchildren can make you feel young again … anything longer than that, and you start to age quickly. I don’t care what mom said, grandma said I can have it! All grandchildren are brilliant and beautiful, and obviously take after their grandmother. I don’t get it dad. If grandma’s not a card player, then why did you say she’s n...
