  • Warren's Wood Fire Wonder

    Dan Stevens|Jul 12, 2023

Anybody who has ever driven down Stagecoach Trail in Warren near the entrance to the Jo Daviess County Fairgrounds has seen the sign ... WPPO World Headquarters. But not many realize that isn't a cute slogan for a small business, that's a small business that's literally established a world-wide footprint already. Dan Johnson spent much of his adult life building logging supplies, and items as he put it that were "needs". But a side passion was his love of wood-fired pizza, and as fate would...

  • Preacher's Piece

    Kevin Cernak|Jul 12, 2023

A few weeks ago, after dinner one summer Sunday night, my wife and I decided to take advantage of the lingering daylight and go for a little drive. Our little drive ended up being more than little and we found ourselves in Galena. We drove the backroads getting there and once in town, we checked out the downtown area and then began exploring the neighborhoods up in the hilly parts of town. They were amazing. That town has some serious history about it. Afterward, we decided to take a different...

  • Point To Ponder

    Dan Stevens|Jul 12, 2023

So, what was your most difficult accomplishment physically? I mean, it could be in athletics – scoring 30 points in a basketball game – or maybe a personal record in running or weight lifting – or maybe just completing the work on the flower garden you had planned on a hot summer day. There's a reason I ask. You see, for years, what I thought was my greatest physical accomplishment took place back when I was in school. To this day there is a sixth grader school record at Liberty Middle Schoo...

  • Open Letter To Stephenson County

    Jul 12, 2023

Hi Stephenson County – there has been much fervent discussion around the issue of maintaining a Nursing Home by Stephenson County Government in the last couple years. In my current capacity as Finance Chairman on the County Board, I would like to ask the people of Stephenson County to contact your local representative and express your opinion on the continuance of the Stephenson County Nursing Center: Sell it to a private entity - or - Keep it in the County Government’s possession While many may be familiar with the Nursing home, these sam...

  • Lighter Side

    Jul 12, 2023

Marriage is just a fancy word for adopting an overgrown male child who cannot be handled by his parents anymore. I asked my dad how much it cost to get married, but he said he didn’t know – he was still paying for it. Marriage is full of surprises, but it’s mostly just asking each other, “Do you really have to do that right now?” It might be true that in China, a man doesn’t know his wife until he marries, but I would argue that this truism happens everywhere. And I do mean … everywhere. The two golden rules of marriage are 1) The wife is a...

  • So Where Do We Go From Here?

    Jul 12, 2023

For many years, the county board has spent much of its time on one issue, the nursing home. Last month, we approved a Letter of Intent to begin the process of selling the Nursing Home for $1.6M. At that meeting, I talked about how much time and effort has been put into duplicating nursing home services for 0.1% of the county’s population instead of the things we should be working on for the public. Here’s a partial list: Reducing Crime, Drugs & Gang Violence Our County roads and bridges are in serious need of upgrading due to funding being $12...

  • In Dad's Honor

    Jul 12, 2023

Back in the early 1960s, Charlie Osterday was one of the founding members who began the Stockton Firework tradition. "Wow, back then it was 'light the fuse and run away'," joked current firework committee member Dan Oppold. But Otte's daughter and son – Vici and Chuck – knew how much the fireworks meant to their father, and then entire Stockton community today. So, upon his passing, Chuck Osterday and his sister Vici Otte – (Yes, that Vici Otte, former Stephenson County Clerk) – made a donatio...
