  • When Science & Faith Collide

    Dan Stevens|Apr 8, 2020

It was the angry murmur throughout Lena – How could the Beloved Church be holding services on Sunday with large crowds of people when we were all under the Governor's Stay at Home Order that banned groups of more than ten? Well, the short answer is ... they can't. But the bigger questions come in when it comes to enforcement. Village Voices dug into the story, and found what can only be described as a standoff between accepted science and religious belief. The congregation of the Beloved C...

  • Your Voices

    Apr 8, 2020

Dan, Loved your front page! Thank you for the uplift it provided. Personally I think you should put the whole page on your web site as I would pass the word as a must read to friends coast to coast. Larry Lyons Stockton Editor’s note; We did put it on the website under the headline “April Fool”. Dan, Well, your plan worked. I had a guy come in today and say, “You know Dan Stevens right? Well, I heard he got himself into some trouble, what do you know about it?” Apparently some people read the headline, but are not reading the story. Dan Leitz...

  • The Shows (For Now) Will Go On

    Dan Stevens|Apr 8, 2020

We’ve had a lot of people – mainly students, but still – asking whether or not the Voice Awards would be held this year, and the simple answer is “yes.” Many schools, like EPC, Stockton, Aquin, Lena-Winslow and Warren were rehearsing their shows for a scheduled spring performance when all of the Quarantine for Corona hit. Although they had to cancel the performances, they have all still paid royalty fees, and as one director put it, “The Theater company’s were very willing to work with us.” In...

  • School Is Still In Session

    Dan Stevens|Apr 8, 2020

When the Coronavirus quarantine first hit, the schools in our area were officially on "Act of God" days – meaning that they really had no responsibility. But as of March 31st, the ISBE (Illinois State Board of Education) mandated e-learning programs for every school in the state. "Every school had to submit a report regarding how they were going to handle e-learning in every academic area," said Stockton High School Principal Casey Downey. But there was one catch – according to the Governor and...

  • Preacher's Piece

    Kevin Cernak|Apr 8, 2020

“Worry Free” The great theologian Charlie Brown had this to say about worry: “I’ve developed a new philosophy, I only dread one day at a time.” So we’re stuck in this coronavirus shutdown and I think the mindset has shifted from curiosity, (what’s this all about); to fear (what is this invisible pandemic? And I hope I don’t get it!); and now to worry (what does this all mean to me and my family? How are we going to pay our bills if we lose our jobs)? And farmers have to dump their milk beca...

So here is a potential list of things you might want to do to occupy your time whil...

  • Covid-19 Presents Another Hurdle For County Fairs

    Capital News Network|Apr 8, 2020

The social distancing guidelines that led Illinois county fairs to cancel off-season events on their grounds through the end of April is one part of a financial impact double-whammy, a trade official said. Many local fairs use revenue from off-season events and activities to “pay the bills,” said Ken Tyrrell, president of the state’s Association of Agricultural Fairs. Guidelines from Gov. JB Pritzker’s office regulating the number of people allowed to congregate shrank over the past few weeks f...
