  • Shadows Of The Past

    Dan Stevens|Oct 26, 2022

There are well known rivalries in sports – the Packers and Bears; Yankees and Red Sox; Cubs Cardinals; and don't get me started on Indiana vs Purdue in basketball. And while Northwest Illinois has its share of big rivalries in High School sports, when it comes to volleyball, there are none bigger – anywhere – than Lena-Winslow against Eastland. The roots of the rivalry run deep – all the way back to the mid 70s when both programs first began. With Rose Black leading the Panthers and Linda L...

  • Your Voices

    Oct 26, 2022

Editor; Whenever I’m told to vote for something more “fair,” I have to wonder, “How do YOU define fair?” Currently our Le-Win school board requires mandatory representation, which means all members can’t be elected from one neighborhood, ensuring rural citizens and smaller towns have representation as well. Let’s imagine that Stephenson County made the same proposition – eliminate mandatory representation of districts. This would mean that, due to higher population, Freeport could essentially make every decision for Stephenson County. On a st...

  • Volleyball Playoff Predictions

    Dan Stevens|Oct 26, 2022

Aquin, Galena and Forreston completed their seasons as undefeated conference champions, while Dakota, Durand, Fulton, and Lena-Winslow all proved they are more than capable of making a strong post season run. So, what's going to happen this week? Who will live up to expectations, and who will surpass them? Well, from what I've seen throughout the season, here's what my crystal ball is showing me. Annawan Regional More than any other Regional, the seeding for the Annawan Regional was just plain...

  • Freeport Park District Awarded Urban Forestry Funding

    Oct 26, 2022

The Freeport Park District was awarded a $15,000 grant for tree planting in Winter Park. The funds were provided by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Forest Service through the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) Urban and Community Forestry Partner Grant Program, and administered by The Morton Arboretum and the Chicago Region Trees Initiative (CRTI). Adding trees is part of the beautification and enhancements being done at Winter Park. "The planting of new trees...

  • One Man's Opinion

    Jim Sacia|Oct 26, 2022

With an election looming, I marvel at the rhetoric and actions of many. They tell me that it is because of the Supreme Court’s reversal of Roe V Wade that pregnancy crisis centers are being bombed and attached in a variety of ways. Typically, a scared young woman carrying an unplanned fetus would seek one of these centers to help her evaluate her options. Why would we try to destroy these centers? Please help me understand. By virtue of the name of the organization “Planned Parenthood”, that...

  • Preacher's Piece

    Kevin Cernak|Oct 26, 2022

A few months ago, somebody sent me an anonymous package in the mail postmarked from Tinley Park, Illinois. I was most curious about this package, because I don’t know anybody from Tinley Park, Illinois. When I opened it, I found a 4” x 12” wooden plaque with the emboldened words on it in all caps: WORK HARD STAY HUMBLE. I’m not sure why this was sent anonymously, apparently somebody sensed the need. Although I don’t care for anything anonymous, this saying has captured my thoughts lately - mainl...

  • Point To Ponder

    Dan Stevens|Oct 26, 2022

My Dad was very old school when it came to voting. Every time people complained about low voter turnout, he immediately stated how much he liked it when the turnout was low. “Don’t vote,” he’d say. “That just makes my vote count for more.” Mathematically, he had a point. The fewer voters, the higher percentage your vote counted. So, for years, every time I heard concerns about low voter turnout, I just remembered my dad and thought nothing of it. But things have changed. For as long as I can re...

You've seen the pairings, but how much do you know about the teams that will be squaring off against the NUIC Northern qualifiers? Well, let's look at some numbers. Chicago Richards at Lena-Winslow This one w...

He told me I was so good at multi-tasking that they were going to fire me in phases. I thought it was a myth but it’s true – when you’re fired, your whole resume flashes before your eyes. Everybody else at my company was laid off due to the slowing economy … I was just fired. You know you’re getting fired when they bring you into an office you’ve never been in before, and it’s nearest to the exit. Let’s celebrate your new job promotion by doing something that can get you fired. Oh, I’m sorry. I had no idea that doing both your job and mine...

  • Better Years Ahead

    Todd McKenna|Oct 26, 2022

Friday night's game - and the season for that matter - didn't end the way the Aquin Bulldogs wanted but they walked off Conley Field following their 66-22 loss to Polo knowing there were some positives to build on as the season progressed. It was Senior Night Friday as Aquin hosted the Polo Marcos and six members of the team put on the blue and gold for the last time on the football field. Hunter Buss, Aiden Wolf, Harrison Kleckner, Abbott Thruman, Mason McIntyre and Zach Van Horn all will...
