Dan, We just saw the photo in this week’s paper of Emilee. We wanted to thank you for publishing the blurb. Deb Hamilton told me she had told you about Emilee’s Monsoon story. Emilee actually knew nothing of the “Monsoon”. We planned the surprise in anticipation she was going to still be in the hospital waiting for her bone marrow to begin producing new, healthy cells again. She was luckily released a week before her birthday. We have not counted yet how many cards she received-they are actually still arriving! But the response has been no...

  • The Toughest Job To Fill

    Dan Stevens|Oct 14, 2020

If you were to contact any School District in the region – or even in the state for that matter – and ask them what is the toughest job position they have to fill, the answer would be immediate – Bus Drivers! Every single school district is in need of either full time or substitute bus drivers – but what makes that job so hard to fill? To begin with, a CDL is needed to drive one of the large school busses we see on the roads today, and the process of getting a CDL is not simply taking a test. "...

  • The Lighter Side

    Oct 14, 2020

So far, the year 2020 is like looking both ways before crossing the street and then getting hit by an airplane. A story on the news announced that the Liberal Left is furious about Homeschooling. Not that they question the quality of education, but because spanking and prayer are both allowed again in the classroom. This Coronavirus is changing everyone's behavior. I used to cough to hide a fart, now I fart to tray and hide my cough. Does anybody else think we will begin seeing lawyer ads in ten years that read: Were you or someone in your...

  • Preacher's Piece

    Kevin Cernak|Oct 14, 2020

Life is hard. It always has been and it always will be. We are under attack from all angles it seems. From politics to culture to family to our own personal religious beliefs - we’re all under attack. It’s easy to lose heart for many reasons not the least of which has to do with our own bodies and health. Just read Ecclesiates chapter 12 if you want to know how bad it can get. It talks about when your eyesight fades, and your hands and legs tremble, and your back bends in weakness, when you...

  • No Pain, Big Gain

    Dan Stevens|Oct 14, 2020

The first time Aquin's Gwen Stovall squared off against the hills of Lake Carroll in a Cross Country competition this Fall, she wasn't even the first runner from Aquin to cross the finish line – let alone claim one of the top five spots. But last week, in her second race amid the ski hills that the Cougars call home it was a totally different story as Stovall pulled away early from the pack and blew everyone away in claiming first place overall by over 23 seconds. So what changed? "Well, I h...

  • Point To Ponder

    Dan Stevens|Oct 14, 2020

Getting an idea is one thing, but when you work out a theory with someone else, and it all makes sense … you are onto something. I need to set the stage first. A friend and I accompanied our significant others to a local bar one night, and both of us found ourselves spending more time watching other people than anything else. Anyway, we both began to notice a pattern, and after talking about our discoveries, a set theory began to develop. The more we tested it, the more it proved accurate. So n...

  • Edler Advances Alone

    Dan Stevens|Oct 14, 2020

While the NUIC Boys were basically all placed into a Regional together and allowed to duke it out, for the girls – because there were so few full teams – they were shipped off to Byron where they had to try and compete with the likes of Boylan, Winnebago and Rockford Christian. As for team results, Boylan dominated as they pulled away from Winnebago to win by 14 strokes. The highest finish by the local small schools was turned in by conference champion Galena, but even the Pirates were only abl...

  • State Rep's Report

    Andrew Chesney|Oct 14, 2020

We are now well into Governor Pritzker’s latest shutdown of the Northwest Illinois economy, purportedly because of “science and data”, regardless of whether that science and data contradicts the mitigation measures he has placed on Region 1 residents. First, the regions are arbitrarily designated, as I have pointed out in the past. Their boundaries were not built from hospital catchment areas, but rather regions drawn for other emergency protocols and ill-suited to fit the modern threat of co...

  • Anderson Tops Regional Field

    Dan Stevens|Oct 14, 2020

All season long Village Voices had been tracking the scores of the region's top High School golfers, and those who followed it noticed how hot Eastland's Andy Anderson got at the end of the season – recording a 36 in the final week. Well that high quality play carried over into the Regional last week at Wolf Hollow as Anderson claimed medalist honors with an excellent score of 76 over the 18 hole competition. The low number was needed as Eastland – as a team – barely edged out Galena for secon...
