  • Lucy In The Sky Hits Diamonds

    Dan Stevens|Oct 12, 2022

Game one between the Aquin Bulldogs and Lena-Winslow Panthers was one of the most thrilling, edge-of-your-seat back and forth battles ever witnessed. Both teams used both of their time outs, and both of them had huge plays by huge players, but as the score climbed to the terminal mark of 25 ... neither team was in charge. "I don't know about you Dan, but my heart is racing right now," said Aquin head coach Robyn Stovall. "Have you ever seen a more exciting game?" Four times, the Panthers had...

  • Warriors Still Having Fun

    Dan Stevens|Oct 12, 2022

At 6:30 in the morning, Warren JV Volleyball coach Ana Zinke got a phone call she never saw coming. Head coach, Brynn Bohnsack, was going into the hospital for an emergency appendectomy and Zinke would have to take over as the varsity coach too that night in Warren's conference battle with Stockton. "I was nervous all day," Zinke admitted. "On top of it all this was pink night, so all of the jersey numbers were different, but fortunately Addie (Bohnsack, Brynn's younger sister who is on the...

  • Another Day At The Office

    Dan Stevens|Oct 12, 2022

As the Lena-Winslow Panthers performed yet another routine ground pounding 44-18 win over the Du/Pec Rivermen, it allowed some deeper evaluation into what was taking place. On a third and eight for Du/Pec, the Rivermen went into an empty backfield – meaning there was no running back or end in the backfield near the quarterback – he was by himself. Lena-Winslow assistant coach Kevin Milder was screaming, "Empty! Empty!" and as the ball was snapped, Panther senior linebacker Jace Flynn raced in fr...

  • Preacher's Piece

    Kevin Cernak|Oct 12, 2022

We went shopping for trees today. It seems when you plant trees in the fall they have a better survival rate than spring planting. Last fall at this time, we planted nine trees around our new parking lot at church. They were a variety of different types of maple trees. The soil they were planted in wasn’t the greatest, it was a mixture of mostly clay and a little topsoil that got pushed to the edges during excavation. In spite of not watering them all summer, they are all doing well. Last s...

  • Point To Ponder

    Dan Stevens|Oct 12, 2022

I’m beginning to doubt education. I was pondering nothing while sitting on the throne the other day … yes, that throne – when suddenly it hit me: I was lied to in school. I mean, if you were anything like me, they told us back in our High School science classes that the waves on the ocean were caused by the wind, the weather and the gravitational pull of the moon. But that doesn’t make sense when you think about. Because no matter what side of the ocean you’re on, the waves are always coming to...

  • Lighter Side

Online dating helps me meet and break up with someone without leaving the house. She asked me for one good reason she should date me. So, I told her that she’d never have to worry about someone trying to take me away from her. She told me it’s not me, it’s her. Apparently, she said she has a bad habit of dating losers. You know you’re on a bad blind date when both of you keep looking at your watch wondering what time it is. Based on the content of your online profile, I am guessing that literacy is not one of the characteristics we share....

  • Jo Daviess Files Suit Against No Cash Bail

Chris Allendorf, Jo Daviess County States Attorney|Oct 12, 2022

As the state’s attorney of Jo Daviess County, I took an oath to protect and defend the Constitutions of the United States and the State of Illinois. That is why today I have joined a bipartisan group of state’s attorneys and sheriffs across this state by filing suit on behalf of my office, Sheriff Kevin Turner, and the People of the State of Illinois to challenge the Constitutionality of the “No Cash Bail” provisions of the Safe-T Act. Quite simply, I believe many provisions of No Cash Bail are unconstitutional, though this is not the course of...

  • Grape Picking Profits

    Oct 12, 2022

Massbach Ridge Winery has been recruiting area organizations to help with their grape harvest for close to 20 years now. This year was no different with eight organizations earning their portion of over $4,000 by picking grapes for the winery in September. These groups included Freeport High School Cheer, Eastland/Pearl City Cheer, West Carroll High School Cheer and three Pearl City school groups. "We love having school groups and other charitable organizations help us harvest grapes. It's a...

  • Farm Bureau Beat

    Victoria Hansen|Oct 12, 2022

I am sure this is common with others as it is for me: as a kid, tween and teen I often became involved with things because someone in my family had done them previously. I joined 4-H because my mother had been a member and my grandma a local club leader. During my time in 4-H I showed dogs, rabbits, participated in childcare and development and did cooking projects. For those who are not familiar, “4-H is delivered by Cooperative Extension- a community of more than 100 public universities a...

  • Board Delivers Hadley A Haymaker

    Dan Stevens|Oct 12, 2022

Working on a board, any board, is never easy. By definition, you look for people with opposing views to debate what are the best ways to proceed. But the only way progress is made, is through the leadership that guides it. Simply put, lack of leadership leads to a lack of results. That was never more evident than in the Stephenson County Board “Special Meeting that Wasn’t” on October 3rd. It is important to point out that a vote was taken at the regular meeting on September 22nd in regard to wh...
