  • Preacher's Piece

    Kevin Cernak|Oct 7, 2020

When I was a kid my brothers and I and our cousins would go camping down by our creek. There were usually about 6 of us who set up our little pup tents. We’d sit around a warm fire and talk deep into the night. With the soft sound of water rippling over the rocks on the bottom of the creek, the older kids would tell horror stories about murderers and rocking chairs and hook arms. When we finally crawled into our tents to go to sleep, we were too scared to even close our eyes. We usually w...

Ellie Bower painted a special Barn Quilt for her grandfather – Roger Lobdell – and with the help of Tyler Lobdell of Lobdell Auctions, they were able to get it mounted recently on the barn out on Fisher road north of Lena. Above, Tyler and Ellie pose for a shot while standing in the lift which proved to be ... temperamental....

  • The Hills Continue To Win

    Dan Stevens|Oct 7, 2020

It may only be their first season hosting Cross Country meets, but the hills of Lake Carroll have already earned a reputation for the challenge they present to area runners. More local schools learned that the hard way last week as Aquin, Galena and Dakota all got their first chance facing the hills as they joined Durand/Pecatonica and Eastland for a meet. The end result was not hard to predict – the teams who were familiar with the rugged up and down winding course were able to do better t...

  • Point To Ponder

    Dan Stevens|Oct 7, 2020

Please excuse my tone of voice, but the latest move by the State of Illinois to shut down all indoor dining in our region has me more than a little angry. OK, I get it, the Cornovirus is a serious issue … at least for the elderly, or those with serious health risks such as … well … me – overweight, diabetes and asthma – yeah, I fall right smack dab into that category. And I don’t want to diminish the impact it has had on those impacted by it either. Lowell Buck is a good friend, but he and his...

  • Pirates Sweep To Girls Crown

    Dan Stevens|Oct 7, 2020

The Galena Lady Pirates blew past the competition at the NUIC Girls Tournament held at Lake Carroll last week as they finished an impressive 25 strokes ahead of second place Polo. In golf, a team must have four competitors complete the 18 hole course to earn a team score. They may have as many as six, but a minimum of four is needed for a team score. The lowest four scores are added together in order to obtain a team score. The point being – depth is the biggest factor. Many area teams have exce...

  • Pearl City Update

    Oct 7, 2020

Pearl City 4th Graders performed "Apple" science experiments for Johnny Appleseed day. They first saw the importance of hand-washing in the "Germy Apple" experiment. Several slices of apple were placed in the "control" bag that had not been touched by anyone. Next, several slices of apple were passed around the room and then placed into the "variable" bag. Students immediately washed their hands after touching the apple. They made predictions about what would happen, and then observed...

  • The Lighter Side

    Oct 7, 2020

My level of sarcasm is to the point where I don't even know if I'm kidding or not. I've made it from the bed to the couch ... there's no stopping me now! Yesterday I wore something from five years ago and is actually fit! I am so proud of myself ... It was a scarf, but still. Let's be positive here. I love all mythical creatures ... Vampires, Werewolves, Unicorns and kids who listen. I haven't eve gone to bed yet, and I already can't wait to get home from work tomorrow. The next time you get a call from an unknown number, answer it by saying...

  • Home Sweet Home

    Dan Stevens|Oct 7, 2020

As a kid, we all played with dominos at one point or another. Not the actual game, but lining up the tiles on end to make a long trail, then knocking the first one down to watch the chain reaction. And while it may not have been anticipated, a long chain reaction – sparked by Covid - is making every home in our region much more valuable. Now, the main domino in this chain reaction is something that we would never think of as becoming rare and valuable – lumber. Yes, the simple lumber cut fro...

  • Dakota Domination

    Dan Stevens|Oct 7, 2020

The biggest drama regarding the NUIC Boys Conference Tournament was whether or not the Dakota Indians would be allowed to participate. After having their school shut down due to Covid issues, the initial ruling was that they would not be able to play – even though they were the undefeated regular season conference champion coming in. But the Dakota School Board allowed the team to compete after a thorough round of testing and protocols were followed, and the Indians responded by having five g...
