  • Smoke And Mirrors

    Dan Stevens|Oct 5, 2022

On paper, the Stockton Blackhawks are supposed to be in the middle of a rebuilding year. They have no six foot power hitter, or any massive high jumping stud they can turn to in a pinch, they don't serve bullets on a line straight over the net that fall off the table for points, in fact – offensively – the Blackhawks have fewer kills than most teams in the NUIC-West. So, how is it possible that they sit at 5-1 in the conference and 11-7-2 overall? The answer is in some exceptional defense. As...

  • Amazing Gracie

    Dan Stevens|Oct 5, 2022

There are some exceptional volleyball hitters in the region that hammer the ball with thunderous power ... and then there is Galena's Gracie Furlong. As the Galena Pirates went to warm up for their conference match at Scales Mound, there was suddenly a tremendous "boom" that caught everyone's attention. Conversations stopped mid-sentence, kid's busy teasing each other suddenly stopped and stared, and even popcorn being consumed froze mid-chew. "What can I say? She's amazing," said Hornet head...

  • Top Of Their Game

    Dan Stevens|Oct 5, 2022

It was supposed to be the match of the season – the top two ranked 1A teams in the state of Illinois according to MaxPreps. Aquin against Dakota – for the game that, in all likelihood, would decide the NUIC North Champion. But it didn't take long for Aquin to ruin the party. The Bulldogs are loaded with talented athletes, but like most area high school teams they had struggled to put all of the pieces together. In addition, they had a bad habit of letting their talent carry them without even try...

  • Girls Golf Regional Results

    Oct 5, 2022

With fewer Girls Golf teams than Boys, our region was faced with a rather loaded regional, so the end results were not surprising. But even though we did not see an area team advance, individually, our region did see a couple of athletes who will move on to the Sectional competition. The top three teams advanced on to the Sectionals as a team. Final team scores were: 1 Boylan 344 2 Winnebago 393 3 Byron 398 4 Rockford Christian 399 5 Stillman Valley 410 6 RR/SM 415 7 Galena 421 8 Oregon 429 9 Rockford Lutheran 472 10 LW/PC 473 11 Polo 475 12...

  • Another Ground Pounding

    Dan Stevens|Oct 5, 2022

It's getting to the point where the biggest challenge the Lena-Winslow Panthers are facing is convincing themselves to take opponents seriously. Woodstock Marian Catholic is currently listed as a 4A school even though their enrollment is just over 300. (Thank you IHSA multiplier) But we're talking about a school that has a proud tradition of football success. A school currently with a 1A recruit in tight end Christian Bentancur who has already received offers – as a junior – to play in the Big...

  • Preacher's Piece

    Kevin Cernak|Oct 5, 2022

With fall comes the harvest. And with the harvest our church has an annual garden produce contest. So far, the biggest watermelon has weighed in at 38.8 pounds and the largest tomato is 16 inches in circumference. Our granddaughter has the biggest pumpkin - (many thanks to Grandma) - let’s just say it’s huge! Somebody else entered a pear that’s over 10 inches in diameter. It’s a lot of fun celebrating God’s goodness. With fall also comes the election season. Our mailbox is full of fliers ev...

  • Point To Ponder

    Dan Stevens|Oct 5, 2022

I am not a morning person – never have been. Typically, my daily routine involves covering a game somewhere, getting home around nine or nine thirty, downloading the photos, writing up the story, then posting it all online, and my “job” is usually done by eleven or so. I then spend about an hour watching sports center on ESPN, or – depending on the day – going through emails that had come in while I was off at the game. The point being – I get to bed around midnight, sometimes later – and wake...

  • Lighter Side

    Oct 5, 2022

Unfortunately Mr. Stevens, your HMO won’t cover the cost of anesthesia, so we’re going to have to use our low-budget procedure to put you out … it’s called a hammer. We’ll give you helium. It won’t kill the pain, but when you scream it’s funny. By golly, this cavity is so deep I’ll have to get at it by going through your ear … just kidding. At my age, the only thing I purchase that’s two-piece are dentures. Yes, I floss regularly – right before every dental appointment. No, your dentist did not say that bacon and soda work just as well as...

  • Explaining The SAFE-T Act Debate

Carl Larson, Stephenson County States Attorney|Oct 5, 2022

The Safe-T Act, if enacted, will have a number of impacts on the system of criminal justice within Illinois. Virtually all of them will reduce the ability of police, prosecutors and judges to meaningfully address crime. As McHenry County State's Attorney Patrick Kenneally wrote in a lawsuit challenging the Safe-T act filed September 19, 2022, " To many in law enforcement and many Illinoisans, the sudden and unexpected enactment of HB 3653 was a political ambush. An ambush orchestrated by a...

    Todd McKenna|Oct 5, 2022

The Orangeville Broncos made sure they got homecoming week off to a good start with a convincing 76-38 thumping of Rockford Christian Life and in the process earned their first win of the season. The Broncos offensive line opened massive holes for Blake Folgate and Maisen Pfeiffer and their hard running with a few juke moves added in helped rack up an eye-popping 527 yards rushing on the afternoon in Orangeville. The Orangeville fans knew they were in for something special to cheer for early as Folgate took the opening kick back 83 yards for...
