  • The Measure Of A Man

    Dan Stevens|Sep 25, 2019

What truly is the measurement of a man's life? Is it the possessions he obtains, the amount of money he ends up making, the family members who love him, or the multitude of people whose lives he touched? That question was answered fairly clearly last week at the Hard Body Open on the South Course at Eagle Ridge Golf Course. David Fulton of Hanover could best be described by mayor, and good friend, Don Schaible, who said simply "Dave was Hanover. He worked hard, loved life, and was always there...

  • Point To Ponder

    Dan Stevens|Sep 25, 2019

My first clue was when I got home from covering a volleyball game and noticed the next morning that our backyard had already had the grass cut. Now normally that's my job, and I had noticed it was about to be due for a trim, but before I ever got to it ... the task was done. The next clue came when I got home from covering a game in Lanark Thursday night and noticed that the garbage had already been taken out to the curb by my wife. Again, this was my task, and every Thursday I would round up th...

  • Preacher's Piece

    Kevin Cernak|Sep 25, 2019

When I was in high school I used to envy the kids who lived in town because there was always enough people in the neighborhood where they could round up a few of them to play baseball or basketball or whatever sport they felt like playing at any given time. I also envied them because on game nights (real high school games) they would go home after school, eat a little something for supper and then all they had to do was wait around and get ready for the big game. In contrast, being a farm kid,...

  • Cannabis Is Coming

    Dan Stevens|Sep 25, 2019

On January 1st of 2020, recreational use of marijuana will be legal in the State of Illinois. But the question that sparks is – where will people go to buy it, and how will the region benefit in terms of tax dollars? To begin with, the license to be able to sell recreational marijuana is only awarded by the State itself. It is not like a liquor license where the individual municipalities control who gets one. In addition, the cost of getting the license if one is awarded is extremely e...

  • Chesney Donates Unwanted Pay Raise

    Sep 25, 2019

State Representative Andrew Chesney (R-Freeport) refused to accept the $1,628 pay raise given to lawmakers this year by donating $1,628 to local organizations serving Northwest Illinois. “Lawmakers do not deserve a pay raise considering the fiscal condition of Illinois and the push for higher taxes on residents at all turns,” said Rep. Chesney. “I co-sponsored legislation to reject the pay raise, but that legislation was not called for a vote this year. That’s why I am rejecting this pay by donating it to local organizations represe...

  • Apple River State Bank Expands To Hazel Green

    Sep 25, 2019

Apple River State Bank announced today that it has reached an agreement with C&D Properties to open a banking facility in the Southwest Mart, 3515 Percival Street, Hazel Green, Wisconsin. C&D Properties is the corporation for the Saunders Oil convenience stores in Wisconsin. After a remodeling period, the new banking center is expected to open in December subject to regulatory approval. “We are a Jo Daviess County bank and are thrilled to extend our convenience to southwest Wisconsin,” said Joel Holland, the bank’s Chief Executive Offic...

  • Stages Of Development

    Dan Stevens|Sep 25, 2019

On Monday night in Warren, the Orangeville Broncos swept past the Warriors by a pair of 25-13, 25-13 scores. As far as the game was concerned the story was an obvious one. The Broncos attacked Warren with a barrage of hitters coming from every imaginable angle. Although the Broncos lost Emily George when she came down on a ball during warm-up at Dakota, they found a suitable replacement in sophomore Kylie Wirth who drilled four kills in game one – five overall on the night. But there was s...

  • Classic Cat Fight

    Dan Stevens|Sep 25, 2019

When Lena-Winslow and Eastland get together in volleyball, it really doesn't matter what their respective records are. That lesson was driven home hard as the underdog Cougars took the Panthers to the limit in a three game battle that was even more tense and exciting thanks to a "collegiate" referee who missed the third game all together. With Eastland holding a 18-17 lead in game three, Jaden Julius drilled a shot at the net that smacked off of Dani Rush of Eastland at the net and skidded...

  • Nobody's Push Over

    Dan Stevens|Sep 25, 2019

In their first meeting earlier this season the Pearl City Wolves blew past River Ridge without breaking much of a sweat. So when they met up Wednesday for their conference battle, it wasn't too big of a surprise that several of the Pearl City front line starters were on the bench. "I wanted to give some other people playing time," said head coach Jane West. The first game proved to be quite competitive, with neither team pulling away, but the Wolves were able to squeak out the 25-23 win. So...

  • Panthers Put Down Pirates

    Dan Stevens|Sep 25, 2019

It was only a conference game, and there is a lot of season yet to be played. And while it does put the Lena-Winslow Panthers in the driver's seat for the NUIC West title, few people remember who won the conference. It's the post season that is far more important. But while all of that may be consolation to the Galena Pirates, for the Lady Panthers, it was a monumental win as they finally exercised the demons who had haunted them ever since the Sectional championship match last season. "The only...

  • Slobber Knocker Football

    Dan Stevens|Sep 25, 2019

It was a historic homecoming for the Warren Warriors last Friday night. To begin with, their contest against the Benton/Scales Mound/Shullsburg Knights incorporated fans from no less than ten different small towns between the two combined co-ops. It also marked the first time that a Six Rives conference game was ever played in Illinois. But most important of all, it pitted the undefeated and top ranked 7A Blackhawk/Warren Warriors against the undefeated and sixth in the state 6A Knights in a...

  • Dakota Can't Slow Panther Juggernaut

    Todd Nielsen|Sep 25, 2019

Any team that has the Lena-Winslow Panthers on their schedule has to have their coaches wondering how they could possibly beat them. Big, strong, fast...if there's an attribute or skill that can help in the sport of football, the Panthers have it. On top of all that, the Panthers are driven by a loss in the state playoffs a year ago and determined they don't repeat the past. The Panthers' offense relies heavily on a three-headed backfield of seniors Sean Ormiston and Isaiah Bruce, and sophomore...

  • Aquin Gets Defensive To Keep Win Streak Alive

    Todd McKenna|Sep 25, 2019

Forgive the Aquin Bulldogs if they seemed a little unsettled early in their game Friday, but they found themselves in an unfamiliar place. Like they have the past three weeks, the Bulldogs threw an opening scoring punch to get them going in the right direction towards another win, but this time the opponent punched back. Still, Aquin stood its ground and recovered using a 26-point second half to post their fourth win in a row 39-7 over the visiting East Dubuque Warriors. The Bulldogs marched 80...
