Dan, Just wanted to send you a collection of thoughts that have been running through my head for a long time. I finally decided to express them in writing to someone who will know what I’m talking about. When I was a junior in high school at Freeport High School, I took an English class that was basically a Journalism class. The teacher was Miss Beulah Charmley, the toughest teacher you’d ever want to meet. One look from Beulah would reduce a person to about 5 inches tall, cringing with fear. But she knew her stuff, and when you learned fro...

  • TLP Cancels 2020 Season

    Jul 8, 2020

Timber Lake Playhouse (TLP), the premier professional summer theatre of northwest Illinois, announces the cancellation of the 2020 season due to COVID-19 complications. All TLP performances will be cancelled until 2021. “Next week, we would have celebrated the World Premiere of What a Wonderful World.” said Dan Danielowski, Executive Director of TLP. “To have to make this decision is very disappointing to all of us.” With the governor’s Phase 4 Guidelines to Reopen Illinois, TLP would have been limited to only fifty patrons per show. “Not only...

  • The Doctor Is Out ... For Now

    Dan Stevens|Jul 8, 2020

The press release came last week – after six years at the helm of the Aquin Boys' Basketball program, Dr. Keith Martin was stepping down. So last week, I sat down with him – not to drum up any dirt over his leaving – but to pick the brain of one of our region's more successful coaches. His resignation was basically due to a rising work load, that when combined with the rigors and intensity of being a successful coach, was – in essence – wiping him out. "I was exhausted," Martin said. "Over the h...

  • Preacher's Piece

    Kevin Cernak|Jul 8, 2020

This past Sunday was my 27th anniversary as Pastor of Martintown Community Church. July 4, 1993 was the day the Congregation called my wife and I to be their leaders. Looking back … in 1993 the average median household income in the United States was $37,241. Today it is $78,500. The Dow Jones high in 1993 was 3799. Today it is 25,827. The price for a gallon of gasoline was $1.11. A first class postage stamp was 29 cents. A dozen eggs was 87 cents and a gallon of milk cost $2.84. Today it is $...

  • Point To Ponder

    Dan Stevens|Jul 8, 2020

I was not looking forward to the Fourth of July. With Stockton’s celebration cancelled that meant that my speech team couldn’t raise money at the lemonade stand, but more importantly I sat there thinking about all of the things I’d miss. I mean, what’s a Fourth of July without a Magee sighting? But then you also had all of the other basketball players who would come over to compete in the three on three tournament – not only did I get to catch up with all of the high school athletes and their...

  • Open Letter To Stockton

    Jul 8, 2020

I have refrained from commenting on any of the school board happenings because I truly believed that things would improve. I believed that people in this community were mature enough to respect other people's opinions even if they didn't agree with them, and not support such hateful name calling and belittling. However, I cannot stay silent any longer. To the spouses of the four school board members, I apologize for what the public has put you through. I find it hard to believe that if any of...

  • State Rep's Report

    Andrew Chesney|Jul 8, 2020

As the State of Illinois, as one unit and not regionally, moved into Phase 4 of Governor Pritzker’s Restore Illinois Plan, businesses across Illinois are working towards reopening but still under restrictions for many. As with each phase of the Governor’s Restore Illinois Plan, employers fueling our economy are finding inconsistencies and needs for improvement to allow them to operate their business without losing money by doing so. I recently sent a letter to Governor Pritzker regarding sig...

  • New Illinois Trailer Fees Boggle The Mind

    Dan Stevens|Jul 8, 2020

If you own a trailer, the new license plate fee is going to give you sticker shock. The state has increased the annual fee for a trailer license plate by $100, regardless of the weight class. For the smallest class of trailers – 3,000 pounds or less – that means the fee jumped from $18 to $118. "My husband and I have an old Bri-mar dump trailer that's twenty years old, and they wanted us to pay $206 to register it," said Linda Boeke of McConnell. "We're on Social Security, how are we sup...

  • The Lighter Side

    Jul 8, 2020

Remember kids: Don't play with fireworks. Let the adults who have been drinking all day set them off. Nothing says, "Let's celebrate America" quite like drinking beer and playing with explosives. You know Stevens, if our Founding Fathers had spent a little more time around you, they would have probably rethought the whole "Freedom of Speech" thing. Just a reminder, fireworks look even more amazing when you're not constantly checking your cellphone. The 5th of July: The day when all of the Facebook addicts upload identical pictures of their loca...

  • Finally, A Ball Game!

    Dan Stevens|Jul 8, 2020

Sunday night up in Argyle, the Orangeville Broncos took out some frustrations on their hosts as they blew past Argyle in a 12-3 drubbing to open up their summer schedule ... well kinda. You see, the IHSA has yet to release their requirements for summer league play, so the Broncos did not have a complete roster by any means – some players even showed up midway through the game after coming from somewhere else. But there was no coach to answer to because the head coaches were nowhere near the dugo...
