  • Third Time's Charm

    Dan Stevens|Jun 23, 2021

For the third time in a row, the Orangeville Broncos had made it to the Class 1A Super Sectional, but for the first time in their history, they finally advanced on to the State final four with a strong 11-4 victory over the Williamsfield Cougars. In any contest, strange hops, mysterious drops and big plays can often turn the tide, and in the first inning things were not looking too good for the Broncos. Tessa Janecke led off with a smash to left field that seemed destined for the fence, but a...

  • Preacher's Piece

    Kevin Cernak|Jun 23, 2021

There's no limit to what you can achieve if you don't mind who gets the credit. After reading about the happenings taking place at Martintown Community Church over the last several months, several of the faithful readers of this column have taken the scenic drive to Martintown, Wisconsin to visit us on Sunday morning. Some have even come back. One person referred to us as “a spot in the road.” That’s a pretty accurate description of Martintown, Wisconsin and we’ve adopted that phrase as our own...

  • Point To Ponder

    Dan Stevens|Jun 23, 2021

So what do you like best about the Fourth of July? I think my tastes have changed as I've gotten older. As a kid, my favorite part was the fireworks. Now, I'm not talking about the big boomers in the sky that everybody "Oohs" and "Aahs" over. No, I'm talking about the personal fireworks that we used to light off as a kid. You know, the Black Cat firecrackers, and bottle rockets that screamed across the sky before they exploded, and ... (We interrupt this column for a legal interjection. In no...

  • Orangeville Memorial Tree

    Jun 23, 2021

On Saturday, May 15th, the OHS chapter of Servant Leadership planted a tree in memory of the three lost in a house fire in Orangeville last September. First, thank you to everyone who purchased a valentine lip sucker, because that was our main fundraiser for this project. Thank you to The Garden...

  • The Lighter Side

    Jun 23, 2021

Every time I go to the public pool, I feel like I'm marinating in pee and Band-aids. Swimming is not a sport. Swimming is a way to keep from drowning. Today a man knocked on my door and asked for a small donation towards the local swimming pool. So, I gave him a glass of water. A blonde, a brunette and a redhead woman decided to compete in the Breast Stroke division of the lake swimming contest. The brunette came in first, the redhead was second, but the blonde took forever to reach the shore. Finally, when she arrived, tired and exhausted and...

  • "Brodogs"? ... Bad Dawg!

    Dan Stevens|Jun 23, 2021

I had heard some rumblings, but wasn’t quite sure what people were talking about, and with the team in the midst of the first run to state in program history, I didn’t pay much attention to it. But on the way home from the Softball state tournament in Peoria last week, I got behind a car that I thought at first was a Bronco supporter. But as I got closer, the name painted on the back window caught me off guard … “Go Brodogs!” it read. The longer I was behind it, the more irritated it made me,...
