  • Your Voices

    Jun 17, 2020

Dan, I just wanted to tell you – over the years you have written some very good and sometimes not so good stories in your paper. Some I loved, some I hated, and some I strongly disagreed with – much like most of your subscribers I’m sure. But I just wanted to say, your Point To Ponder sometimes may get overlooked, but this week it was THE best piece you have ever done in my opinion. Maybe I’m biased because I have known Thomas for over 20 years as Kim was my sister’s best friend. I, like many, have been confused, disgusted, disappointed and som...

  • Preacher's Piece

    Kevin Cernak|Jun 17, 2020

My dad has a sign hanging over his desk that says: “These are the good old days.” So true. For the most part, we tend to look back on certain periods of the past in our lives with favor. These past few days we’ve had beautiful weather. My wife and I were discussing how it reminds us of when we were kids and the endless days of summer when we would work and play for hours in warm sunshine for days on end. We didn’t have to deal with gnats and we didn’t get a torrential downpour every other day...

  • Point To Ponder

    Dan Stevens|Jun 17, 2020

I realize that this may not come as a shock to most of you, but I have never been what you would consider – fashionable. When it comes to how I dress and what I wear, comfort tends to always come before “image”. I mean, let’s be honest, when your basic body type falls in the category of fruit … the latest styles and colors from Ralph Loren are just a waste of money. But with the high heat that was hitting us a couple of weeks ago, I broke down and wore my sandals – your typical black rubbe...

  • Picking Up The Pieces

    Dan Stevens|Jun 17, 2020

A little over a week after the riots had wreaked havoc on downtown Freeport, business owners and employees were out taking down some of the plywood used to cover windows, and trying to return to some sort of normalcy. But it won't be easy. We learned that, unfortunately, several business owners are going to have to pay to repair their broken glass windows by themselves as they deal with their own personal insurance companies. "There are typically three types of coverage," explained Steve Holman...

  • Bronco Changing Of The Guard

    Dan Stevens|Jun 17, 2020

Typically, the average fan has very little contact with, or pays little attention to a school's Athletic Director – unless of course they want to post complaints about a coach. But for the media, our region's Athletic Directors are critical for us to even do our jobs. Athletic Directors provide schedules, organize team photo days, make sure results are emailed out after contests, and keep us posted when a local athlete is going to be honored with a college scholarship. In short, they are the f...

FAM's executive director, Jason Judd states, "I have been humbled by our community's enthusiastic response to raising funds to unlock the initial $5,000 match. With that said, I was taken aback when I received news that an anonymous family is willing to gift us another $5,000 if we are able to match it through communit...

  • Football Changes Coming

    Dan Stevens|Jun 17, 2020

The IHSA has only allowed small groups of athletes to do basic fitness exercises with coaches, so organized football practices are still a long way off. But that doesn't mean there haven't been some major changes being announced. With student enrollments dwindling, no sport showcases the differences – even among the small schools – more than football. There is a big difference for a school with only 132 students that might get 15 to 20 kids out for football, when it is compared to a Lena-Winslow...

  • Justice System In Overwhelm

    Dan Stevens|Jun 17, 2020

Last Thursday, Preliminary hearings were held regarding criminal charges for Mob Action being leveled upon some of the people arrested the night of May 31st during the Freeport riots. Village Voices was in attendance, partly to see if any of the instigators we witnessed that night had been arrested, but also to get a lesson in our local legal system. At a Preliminary Hearing, the burden is on the State's Attorney – the prosecutor. They must prove that there is probable cause that the charges m...

  • Recognizing And Managing Stress

    Jun 17, 2020

Stress on farmers, ranchers and their families caused by lower crop prices, retracting global markets and natural disasters is still an ongoing issue especially in rural areas. Even before the coronavirus outbreak, rural communities across the Midwest were dealing with additional economic stressors including the closing of coal-fired electric plants, offshored manufacturing and reduced demand for oil and gas due to overproduction globally. As a result, rural communities have seen increasing levels of suicide from within a variety of industries...

  • Looking For Solutions

    Dan Stevens|Jun 17, 2020

Abandoned homes sitting vacant have long been a plague on every community. With the only residents being raccoons and other animals, they present an eyesore to their neighborhood, but are also a major health risk as they bring a bigger chance of rabies into the heart of our neighborhoods. The problem is, the law tends to protect irresponsible and bad owners who let these homes fall into a terrible state of disrepair. As long as the owner continues to pay the property taxes, there is little that...
