  • We Were Played

    Dan Stevens|Jun 15, 2022

Back in the May 25th issue of the Voices, our frontpage story was about how the small town controversy that was beginning to surface regarding the Taste of Lena was overblown, a misunderstanding, and I did my best to assure everyone that all was right with the world. I really wasn't worried about it. I mean I got all of the information for the story from the current president of the Lena Lions Club – Ron Fluegel. And on occasions such as this, when trying to help, I did what I often do – I act...

    Kevin Cernak|Jun 15, 2022

Our family has done a lot of grieving the last couple of weeks over the loss of our nephew’s little boy, but our faith is well-grounded and we are trusting God in all His Sovereignty to bring good out of this tragedy. I’d like to dedicate this column to reprinting my great nephews obituary: Christian Joseph Cernek, 2, of Secor, passed away on Wednesday, June 1, 2022 at OSF St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria. He was born November 24, 2019 in Peoria to Jacob and Samantha (Zehr) Cernek. Sur...

  • Point To Ponder

    Dan Stevens|Jun 15, 2022

“Bring out your dead … Bring out your dead …” “I’m not dead yet.” “Oh, yes you are.” “I’m feeling better.” “But it’s a killer rabbit … with, with the teeth” “We need the Holy Hand grenade.” “Yes, the Holy Hand grenade. Pull the pin and count to three. The number to count is three, and three is the number to count. Not two, not four, but three …” “Five is right out!” “Don’t be silly, it’s only a flesh wound.” “I just cut both of your arms off!” “Have at you! I’ll bite off your knee caps!” “We are...

  • The Lighter Side

    Jun 15, 2022

I’m thinking about doing a little work on my lawn but I can’t decide … concrete or gravel? My husband gardens in the nude … it’s a lot more effective than a scarecrow. Keeping up with my yardwork requires a lot of blood, sweat and beers. Personally, I’d like to use my weed whacker on the guy who starts mowing his lawn at 8 am. They might call them “organic” vegetables, but what they really mean is “grown in poop.” I would have mowed my lawn earlier, but the neighborhood petition was late this year. I’m not big into lawn care. I’m more into l...

Out of 16 jumpers Collin won the WIAA D3 High Jump title with a jump of 6'4" and did it on his 18th birthday! (Not bad for a kid who is 6'2" tall) Many people did not know he was competing this year because he spent the majority of the season in physical therapy from an injury he got from the state basketball tournament. He was finally able to heal...

  • Farm Bureau Report

    Victoria Hansen|Jun 15, 2022

If you have ever visited me at my office at the Farm Bureau building, you may have noticed a few frames hanging on the wall. On the left is my degree from the University of Wisconsin-Platteville and on the right, you find my American FFA degree. But in the middle, there is a poster with “72 and we’re still farming too.” This was the theme and poster of the 2018 Harvard Milk Days. The seven glass milk bottles in the poster pay homage to the seven dairies that were once found in my hometown of Ha...

  • Celebrating Senior Stars

    Dan Stevens|Jun 15, 2022

The Jim Shaw Classic All Star Basketball games were held at Eastland High School on Tuesday last week, and the very next day the first ever Volleyball All Star game was played at Eastland as well. And judging from the smiles witnessed both on and off the court ... both events were a big hit with the kids who participated ... which was the whole point. In the Jim Shaw Classic, the game worth watching was the Girls contest, where the South jumped out to a huge 29-8 halftime lead, only to see it...
