  • Dangerous Weather Season Not Cancelled

    Dan Stevens|Apr 22, 2020

The question came up over lunch and it was a good one – Do you know what the warning is for severe weather? The initial discussions revealed that most of us can recognize an ominous sky and threatening weather, but nobody could agree on what the weather siren sounded like, what it meant, if there even was one in every town, let alone what you should do if you did recognize it. So we hit the phones and did some digging to see what the procedure was, and what the sirens were that people should b...

  • The Howling

    Apr 22, 2020

By Paula Baysinger Morhardt You might hear a few yelps, and then, neighbors emerge from their homes and join in, forming a chorus of howls that echo through the night to end the day of isolation in a show of solidarity. From California to Colorado to Georgia to New York, Americans are howling each night at 8 p.m. in their time zone to communicate with the rest of the neighborhood, and from there the entire nation, that we are in this together. The daily howlers are connected by a Facebook group called, simply, Go Outside and Howl at 8pm. The...

  • Preacher's Piece

    Kevin Cernak|Apr 22, 2020

Finding that silver lining … Following are my journal entries from March 23-26. Day 1: For the next three days I’m on a reconnaissance mission to get my wife and mother in law out of Florida. They won’t fly because of the coronavirus so it’s gotta be a ground attack. We’re avoiding any human contact on this trip, since said mother in law is in the high risk category should she catch the virus. I preached a sermon today on why we need to pray and I gave the congregation an assignment and a pra...

  • Stewart Calls Out Pritzker

    Apr 22, 2020

State Senator Brian Stewart (R-Freeport) is calling on Gov. J.B. Pritzker to act as quickly as possible to get unemployment benefits to self-employed “gig” workers. These self-employed workers make up 18 percent of Illinois’ workforce, according to the ADP Research Institute. Under the recently-signed federal stimulus law, these workers are now eligible for unemployment benefits, and states must modify their websites in order to review these claims. However, no modification has been made to the Illinois Department of Employment Security's (IDES...

  • Point To Ponder

    Dan Stevens|Apr 22, 2020

“Uhhg” my wife declared in frustration. Now, typically, that is my cue to ask her what’s wrong – which I dutifully did – not at all expecting the response. “I can’t get out of my pajamas yet because my stretchy pants aren’t finished in the dryer yet.” Yes, it is a different world we live in now. My wife and I always knew we had found the secret to a happy marriage … we never saw each other. She’d get up early in the morning and leave for school before I even woke up. We both would work throu...

  • Looking Back: Defensive Double Header

    Dan Stevens|Apr 22, 2020

Yes, it was a major showdown between two conference contenders, but how many times do both games of a double header turn out to be exciting? Eastland paid a visit to Scales Mound last week, and in two games marked by defensive gems, good pitching and solid play in the field, the Cougars took a huge step towards capturing the conference title with a 3-2, 1-0 sweep over the Hornets. Game one initially looked like the Cougars would run away with it as Marissa Harris was dominant on the mound early...

All of us are inundated with daily updates from Pritzker's Office, and New York, and the White House in regard to the COVID-19 pandemic. But if you are anything like me, I wanted the local news. The Illinois Press Association, and Capital News Network sends every newspaper daily stories dealing with the pandemic, from every angle. And to be honest we print very few of them because 1.) With the daily news on television and the radio, by the time it would make it into print on our pages, it would...
