  • You Have Spoken

    Dan Stevens|Apr 20, 2022

We got a much stronger response than we thought we would in regard to what things to cut from the paper. The puzzle page didn’t make it – best comment about it was that too much of it was geared towards little kids, and our market is more High School kids and their parents. However, many did like the puzzles, so we are going to look for some stand-alone puzzles we can put in. The Court Report got a big reaction both ways, but the best idea we got came in from Joe Vaske who asked why we cou...

  • Preacher's Piece

    Kevin Cernak|Apr 20, 2022

Following are notes from my “diary” that I sent out to the people praying for me before, during, and after surgery to repair a hernia: I’m healing well, thanks for your prayers and concern. The doctor here is good. It was really a God thing. It might seem strange finding a doctor online, but it worked and that’s the way we do things in this present age. I had three requirements: No mesh, no mask, no “vaccine.” (I would have waived the mask requirement but I didn't have to). He is a D.O. - a doct...

  • Power Rankings

    Dan Stevens|Apr 20, 2022

Baseball 1. Forreston 7 – 0 Cardinals claim the top spot with Warhawks loss at Lena. Only team that is unblemished so far. 2. Warren/Stock 8 – 2 Warhawks just couldn't get the key hit against the Panthers and slip in the rankings to #2. 3. Fulton 6 – 2 Most people don't get to see Fulton much, but they continue to put up impressive numbers. 4. Lena-Winslow 6 – 4 Panthers seem to be hitting their stride with huge win over the Warhawks. Will it last? 5. East Dubuque 4 – 4 Warriors took down Gale...

  • Point To Ponder

    Dan Stevens|Apr 20, 2022

Very few things can immediately instill a cold shiver down the spine, but in my household, the words “Stevens project” instantly creates that sense of impending doom. “Stevens Projects” got their name while I was growing up – there was the time my father through it would be a great idea to create a road through the 20+ acres of woods in the back of our property over to our neighbor’s house a quarter mile away who also butted up to the same woods. Of course, nobody but yours truly had ever ac...

  • Lighter Side

    Apr 20, 2022

FACT: Teachers are more excited about Spring Break than students are. May your behavior be the only natural disaster this Spring Break. Dear Mr. Principal, Sending my kids home for a week in the Spring and calling it a “break” is a touch misleading. At my age, Spring Break means taking my full 30 minutes for lunch. I feel as if I lost every ounce of pride and dignity on Spring Break. What’s worse is that I don’t regret it. College Spring Break: One week, 300 beers … you do the math. Spring Break used to be like “Girls Gone Wild”, but then Coron...

  • Espenscheid Forest Preserve Adds Oak Tree Savanna

    Apr 20, 2022

Espenscheid Forest Preserve in Stephenson County is now home to an oak tree savanna thanks to local youth and community members. The group of 25 oak trees, called a savanna, will bring new life to oak-hickory forests currently under threat in Illinois. The 4-H Green Communities Tree Program focuses on tackling global issues at a local level. "Oak savannas are being overtaken by invasive species, as well as more shade-tolerant trees, such as maples," says Curt Sinclair, University of Illinois...

  • State Rep's Report

    Andrew Chesney|Apr 20, 2022

Illinois Democrats passed a new state budget on April 9 full of election-year gimmicks and self-congratulations. With the federal spigot set to stop flowing, Illinois has to get serious about getting our budget right. Democrats’ priorities are out of whack. The so-called ‘higher than expected state revenues’ exist because of inflation, not because of real economic growth. It isn’t surprising when the state gets more sales tax dollars when the price of gas, groceries and consumer goods goes up...

  • Changes In The Making

    Dan Stevens|Apr 20, 2022

Concerns seem to be misplaced regarding recent actions voted upon by the Freeport Park District. Specifically, at their April 5 meeting, the Park Board voted to declare the two homes owned by the Park District – one at the entrance to Krape Park, and the other on the Park Hills Golf Course – to be declared, "Surplus Property." By making the declaration, it allows the District to either sell the property, rent them, or tear them down to make room for some other purpose – but that's what spark...
