    Mar 30, 2022

Hello! I always enjoy reading your paper because it provides plenty of local stories and information that very few papers do anymore around this part of the state. All the sports coverage by Dan Stevens is done very well, and that includes the latest coverage of the Scales Mound boys’ basketball team. What a heck of a year!! However, reading the March 16th article on the Hornets great season, Dan failed to recognize that one other small school in Northwest Illinois did have a better finish than 3rd place in the 1A State Finals. And that was t...

  • Voices All Area Boys Team

    Dan Stevens|Mar 30, 2022

Once again it's time for our All Area Boys Basketball team, but a major point needs to be made before I begin. As many who followed them throughout the season know, I was particularly enamored with the Scales Mound Hornets this season – the biggest reason, was because of how unselfish they were, and played as a cohesive unit. Because of that, it was simply impossible to separate them out into a first or second unit, because I firmly believe – if any part of that equation had been missing, the...

  • Stockton Footloose Loads Of Fun

    Dan Stevens|Mar 30, 2022

It had been three years since the Stockton gym could present a theatrical performance, and the fans were obviously hungry for one as the gym was packed to capacity for their production of Footloose last weekend. People wanted to be treated, and the Stockton kids came through with flying colors. Let's begin with the problems, because there were a lot of them – but that would be expected when trying to rekindle what hadn't been done for three years. The technicals were ... well ... in a word ...

  • Reversing The Exodus

    Mar 30, 2022

Ever wonder what your community could do to keep young adults from leaving? The Greater Freeport Partnership is sponsoring a special presentation looking at strategies for attracting & retaining young adults in rural communities. Based on the new census data (Hill, 2021), 87 of Illinois’ 102 counties experienced population decline between 2010 and 2020. Nearly every rural county in Illinois has experienced an outward migration of its youngest and brightest talent and unfortunately, the trend appears to be continuing. Although the effects of t...

  • Preacher's Piece

    Kevin Cernak|Mar 30, 2022

For the last several weeks the fighting between Russia and Ukraine is front and center on the world’s stage. (Step aside Covid). But the struggle we all share is - how can we help? We are so limited in what we can do. I’m haunted by pictures of bombed out buildings lying in piles of rubble. I see pictures of people digging through debris in search of lost belongings and treasures. One picture is that of a blonde-haired mother holding the hands of her two young daughters who look to be about 6 o...

  • Point To Ponder

    Dan Stevens|Mar 30, 2022

A long time ago, back when I was writing this column for a different publication, I did a piece on “Woman Speak” which somehow made it to the point where it came back at me several years later over the internet as many people altered, or tweaked it, then posted it online. So, while I’m sure many of you might have read some version of this, here is the original column that got the whole thing started. I think it’s fair to say that women are complex creatures. But until I got married, the levels...

  • Lighter Side

    Mar 30, 2022

When I’m an old man, I’m going to leave snacks in little bags on the floor all over the house in case I fall down. According to the Kraft Mac & Cheese box, I’m a family of four. I look really good with a pizza box. I’m going to petition the government to declare cold pizza a legitimate breakfast. Bread puns happen when you yeast expect them. I don’t talk to ice cream, but could be convinced with ice cream. Ask not what you can do for your country … ask what’s for lunch. Sometimes, it’s better to be alone. Especially when you have chocolate. DIE...

  • Celebrating National Athletic Training Month

    Mar 30, 2022

It's a common enough scene – you are attending a high school basketball game. A player goes down withering in agony as they clutch their knee and you hear the call for help. You see a medical looking person come onto the court, but who is it? This is your local athletic trainer. Certified athletic trainers are licensed healthcare professionals who provide medical services for active patient populations. • Area Round Up

Baseball Morrison 5 Lena-Winslow 1 The Panthers were shut down by Mustang pitching as they only managed two hits in the game. Drew Streckwald drew three bases on balls, and the Panthers had runners on third several times but just couldn't get the hit needed to bring them home. As Morrison's Martin struck out 12 Panther batters in his five and two thirds innings of work. Jake Zeal started for the Panthers and struck out eight over his four innings of work. He left the game on the wrong end of a...
