  • Panthers Claim Cat Fight

    Dan Stevens|Feb 19, 2020

They may no longer be in the same conference, but when the Eastland Cougars and Lena-Winslow Panthers lock up on the basketball court, it is still bound to be a battle. Monday night in Lanark, the two twenty win teams squared off with Regional seedings on their minds, but the game had all of the intensity of a Regional final. It got physical, it had 9 lead changes, it had incredible performances by players on both sides of the ball, and in the end a defensive gamble helped the Panthers pull off...

  • 'D' Is The Key

    Todd Nielsen|Feb 19, 2020

River Ridge/Scales Mound held Pecatonica without a field goal for nearly the first 12 minutes of their Regional matchup. The Wildcats were turning the ball over too much, limiting their shots on offense. They shot well in the first quarter, but had only eight shots. In the second quarter, they didn't exactly light the nets on fire, going 2-12 from the field. But that defense gave them a commanding halftime lead. Just seconds into the game, the Wildcats jumped on top as Livia Haas grabbed an offensive rebound and made the putback. A minute...

  • Warren Gives East Dubuque A Scare

    Todd Nielsen|Feb 19, 2020

There probably wasn't anybody not associated with the Warren girls basketball team that would have given them any shot to upset East Dubuque in the first round of the River Ridge Regionals. And while Warren couldn't quite pull it off, they sure had East Dubuque fans worried with just a few minutes to play. In the first quarter, Warren stayed close thanks primarily to their defense. They forced East Dubuque into four turnovers and held them to 3-13 shooting from the field. Brianna Anderson hit a long two-pointer to open the scoring and...

  • Two Paths Lead To Same Result

    Dan Stevens|Feb 19, 2020

Both Stockton and Lena-Winslow advanced to the Regional semifinals Tuesday night by 20 point margins, but the manner in which they did it was far from similar. Stockton gave up the first basket to South Beloit and looked almost like they didn't want to be there for the first few minutes of the game as they repeatedly threw the ball away. But after a pair of three pointers by Katie Wright and Tiana Timpe, the defense picked up – resulting in a slew of fast break opportunities – and from there it...

  • Set Up For A Showdown

    Dan Stevens|Feb 19, 2020

Both the Aquin Bulldogs and Stockton Blackhawks were able to advance into the Class 1A Regional Championship, but the Bulldogs had a much easier road. In the opening game between Aquin and Durand, Abby Barr scored the first six points for Aquin, but after racing out to a quick 8-2 lead, Durand suddenly began to battle back. Lily Moore and Emily Steder were both driving into the middle of the Aquin defense and putting up soft floaters that always seemed to roll in. IN fact, with 4:08 to go in...

  • Layup Line For The Cougars

    Todd Nielsen|Feb 19, 2020

It was always a rarity to see a high school team score 100 points. The institution of the running clock has made it a much more difficult feat. The Eastland girls basketball team was on pace to reach triple digits through three quarters, but the running clock made it essentially impossible. With fouls sending players to shoot free throws, nearly a minute got taken off the clock each time. So, the Cougars had to settle for a 61-point win over Alden-Hebron to secure their appearance in the...

  • Warriors Rise With Riedl

    Dan Stevens|Feb 19, 2020

With just over two minutes gone in the first quarter, the Warren Warriors were suddenly faced with a problem – sophomore post, Braydn Bohnsack – had just picked up his second foul and had to head to the bench. That left Matthew Riedl, all 6'1" of him, as the only inside "force" for the Warriors against a Stockton Blackhawk squad with plenty of size. To make matters worse, Warren had already been whistled for six fouls, compared to only one against Stockton – which made sense because the Black...

  • The Pressure To Perform

    Dan Stevens|Feb 19, 2020

It would be impossible to celebrate the championship won by the Stockton Blackhawks without having your heart bleed for the Aquin Lady Bulldogs. In what was one of the most competitive back and forth games witnessed in a long time, the outcome was not decided until the final horn sounded as Lizzie Eisfeller rebounded the ball and made one dribble before the horn went off to secure the Blackhawks 37-35 victory. The final seconds would not have been any more dramatic if Hollywood had written the...

  • Four Peat

    Todd Nielsen|Feb 19, 2020

It took just 92 seconds for the Eastland Cougars to jump out to an 11-0 lead against Polo in the Regional championship game. It would be a precursor of things to come as the Cougars delivered a massacre on St. Valentine's Day for their fourth straight Regional title. Seconds into the game, Meredith Janssen put the first points on the scoreboard, making a layup. Erin Henze followed with a three-pointer. Then a trey by Lydia Coatney. Then another three-pointer by Henze. Polo coach Jeff Grobe used...

  • From The Desk Down State

    Brian Stewart|Feb 19, 2020

A group of bipartisan lawmakers have introduced a new amendment to our state’s Constitution that would take the process of drawing legislative districts out of the hands of sitting lawmakers. Senate Joint Resolution Constitutional Amendment (SJRCA) 18 would place a question on the ballot to create a new, independent commission that would handle Illinois’ legislative map-drawing process. The independent 17-member commission would be appointed by the Illinois Supreme Court to draw the Con...

  • Preacher's Piece

    Kevin Cernak|Feb 19, 2020

A couple of years ago while shirt shopping I stumbled across a pair of shoes that were on sale. I don’t really like shopping so when I absolutely have to go, I try to get it all done at once so I won’t have to do it again for a few years. I wasn’t really looking for new shoes, but the sale on these was too good to pass up so I bought a pair. I took them home and promptly put them in the closet and completely forgot about them. My old shoes were just fine. It took a long time to break them in to...

  • Point To Ponder

    Dan Stevens|Feb 19, 2020

I’m having a hard time this year, and I’m trying to put my finger on it, so bear with me for a bit here. Every February things get intense throughout the region for one major reason – the IHSA Regionals begin in all of the Winter Sports and Activities. I can still remember taking my daughter Emily with me when I was covering a Regional final in Girls’ Basketball, and she was struck when she saw the players on the losing team crying following the game. “Was she hurt? Dad, why is she crying?...

  • Heartache & Heartbreak

    Feb 19, 2020

It's not supposed to work out this way. Typically, when kids work their tails off, compete fairly, and see a large amount of success over the course of the season, you expect it to come to an end near one of their main goals. For the area's best, that's a trip to the State Finals in Peoria, and for many others, it's simply a trip into the Sectional final rounds. But because speech is subjective, and the judges for the post season are hired – having no clue what took place during the regular s...

  • The State Rep's Report

    Andrew Chesney|Feb 19, 2020

Months before Lt. Governor Juliana Stratton cut to the front of line to be one of the first in Illinois to purchase legal marijuana on January 1st, plans were already in the works by the Pritzker Administration to extend their progressive criminal justice reform policies much further than many Illinoisans who voted for candidate Pritzker even realized. Clearly on Pritzker’s legislative agenda this spring, as highlighted in his State of the State Speech in late January, cash bail reform is a t...
