  • Cougars Hold Court

    Todd McKenna|Feb 23, 2022

Embracing the underdog role and on their home court, the Eastland Lady Cougars roared into the regional championship game after an impressive 50-39 win over Morrison Tuesday night in Lanark. Eastland showed no fear of the favorite Fillies and their obvious height advantage thanks to Camryn and Shelby Veltrop. The Lady Cougars played an aggressive style both on offense and defense which caused Morrison all kinds of trouble throughout the game. Eastland deployed an attacking press all game which caused a multitude of Morrison turnovers and their...

  • Blackhawks Come Up Big

    Todd McKenna|Feb 23, 2022

She's far from the tallest player on her team, but Kassadie Sullivan sure came up big for Stockton Friday night as she helped win a regional championship for the Lady Blackhawks. Sullivan nailed some clutch 3-point shots while cousins Brynn and Kenze Haas did some dirty work down low in the paint to defeat Lena-Winslow 45-40 and earn the title on their home floor. The game was close throughout with the biggest lead for either team at 7 points for the entire game. In fact the game was tied at 38-38 with 2:31 remaining before the Lady Blackhawks...

  • Broncos Are State Bound

    Todd McKenna|Nov 17, 2021

For the first time in more than three decades, Orangeville Broncos fans will get to cheer for their team in a state championship football game. It's been 32 years since the Orangeville Broncos brought home a state championship in 1989, but another one could be on the way although in a different league as the Broncos will face Polo on Friday to determine who is the best team in the 8-man football league in Illinois. The Broncos defeated the Amboy-Lamoille Clippers 34-12 on Saturday in the...

  • Aquin Haunted By Plays Not Made

    Todd McKenna|Nov 3, 2021

In football the plays that are made show up on the scoreboard as points, but often it's the plays that aren't made that make the difference in winning or losing the game. That was definitely the case at Aquin High School Saturday as the Bulldogs fell to Amboy-Lamoille 52-28 in the first round of the 8-man league playoffs. The loss closes the first season Aquin has played in the league adapting to new rules and a different way to play football. Although they exited the playoffs in the first...

  • Big Second Half Carries Missiles

    Todd McKenna|Oct 13, 2021

The Aquin Bulldogs and Milledgeville Missiles met in a clash of Top 5 teams Friday night and it was the Missiles who eventually emerged the winner of this battle 48-28 in Freeport. The two teams both had the offenses humming in the first half as they traded touchdowns and battled to a 20-20 stalemate at the end of two quarters. It was the Bulldogs who opened the scoring early in the game as quarterback Aiden Wolfe zipped a pass to Evan Broge which covered 53 yards for the score. The conversion failed but Aquin had taken a quick 6-0 lead with...

  • Homecoming Pride Falls Just Short

    Todd McKenna|Oct 6, 2021

The saying is football is a game of inches and never was it more true than in Pearl City Friday night in a thriller of a game that needed two overtimes to decide a winner. In the end, another EPC Wildcatz game was decided on the final play of the night and again the Wildcatz came up just short of earning their first victory of the season as the visiting Galena Pirates escaped with a 41-40 victory and they knew it. In fact, one Galena coach walking off the field was overheard saying about EPC, "That's the best 0-6 team I've ever seen." A few...

  • Return To Dominance

    Todd McKenna|Sep 29, 2021

The Aquin Bulldogs responded to their first loss in a long time with a strong effort Saturday as they defeated the visiting West Central Heat 42-0 in Freeport. The Bulldogs scored on their first six possessions on offense to put the game away early as the defense held strong and posted the shutout as well. The Heat got the ball first and, in a sign of things to come, on the first play the snap sailed high above quarterback Devin Shaw's head and resulted in a 23-yard loss. Aquin fared much better on its first possession as they drove 55 yards in...

  • Panther 'D' Still Dominates

    Todd McKenna|Sep 22, 2021

The Lena-Winslow Panthers shrugged off a sluggish start Friday night and eventually found their groove as they racked up a 52-0 win against the East Dubuque Warriors in Lena. In a sign of things to come for the visiting Warriors, their opening drive included a run for a loss, a penalty and eventual punt. The Le-Win defense also provided a preview of what they had in store for the night as they shut down that drive and gave the ball to their offense for their first chance to drive for points. But, the East Dubuque defense showed early they were...

  • The Difference A Year Makes

    Todd McKenna|Sep 15, 2021

Simply put it was ugly and there is no way around describing the game any other way as River Ridge traveled to Milledgeville Friday night only to suffer through a nightmare of a trip. The team that ran the table only four months ago in eight-man football, graduated a lot of talent, and they're still struggling to regain their former form. But even though the scoreboard read 64-0 at the end, a deeper look revealed some positives that the Wildcats can salvage and then hopefully build on for future games. First, the River Ridge fans can be proud o...

  • Fantastic Finish

    Todd McKenna|Sep 8, 2021

For those fans patient enough to wait until the end, they were treated to a thriller of a finish in Stockton Friday night as the Blackhawks hung on to defeat the EPC Wildcatz 18-13. Fans who got soaked in the rain early which led to sloppy play to start the contest were rewarded at the end when the outcome was decided on the last play of the game with 2 seconds left and EPC just outside the Blackhawks goal line. No one was sitting as EPC quarterback Kellen Henze rolled to his left and zipped a...

  • Aquin Rolling Eight Man

    Todd McKenna|Sep 8, 2021

So far it's business as usual for the Aquin Bulldogs despite playing in a completely new league and a different set of rules. Aquin improved to 2-0 on the season Saturday as they defeated the Milford/Cissna Park Bearcats 44-14 in the Bulldogs home opener. The game also provided the home-town fans the first opportunity to get a close look at the 8-man football format that Aquin now is a part of after leaving the NUIC conference due to low enrollment numbers and football players. The move to the new league so far has been a smooth transition and...

  • Fourth Quarter Woes Continue

    Todd McKenna|Apr 28, 2021

In a game where the offense rolled up 32 points, it was the Forreston Cardinals defense that helped give their team a win 32-14 against the EPC Wildcatz in Lanark. But the game had a very different feel as it began with both teams coming out strong in the first quarter and putting points on the board quickly. Forreston took the opening kickoff and, as usual, stayed grounded on offense as their offensive line consistently opened running room for the multitude of running backs the Cardinals can...

  • Bulldogs Still Unblemished

    Todd McKenna|Apr 21, 2021

The Aquin Bulldogs seem determined to make their last season of 11-man football a memorable one and the latest example of that mindset was a 41-8 thrashing of the Forreston Cardinals Saturday night. It was a dominating performance by the Bulldogs under extremely adverse circumstances - playing annual powerhouse Forreston on their home field on their Senior Night under the lights. None of that mattered as Aquin overcame early adversity and proceeded to turn up the heat enroute to their fifth win...

  • Bulldogs Claim Sloppy Victory

    Todd McKenna|Apr 14, 2021

The Aquin Bulldogs earned their fourth consecutive victory by defeating East Dubuque 40-12 in a game that was every bit as sloppy for them as their field was in Freeport. Untimely penalties, dropped and off-target passes plagued the Bulldogs all night, but they still have the playmakers to make up for it on offense and the defense once again not only held strong, but flexed its muscle on many occasions. In fact, Andrew Bowman and Hayden Neunendorf spent so much time in the Warriors' backfield they should've paid rent. Aquin took the ball for...

  • Bulldogs Still Unblemished

    Todd McKenna|Apr 7, 2021

The Aquin Bulldogs stayed undefeated on the season at 3-0 but they had to work hard for it on a trip Saturday to Milledgeville. While the final score showed 40-14, the game was much tighter than that early as the first half featured big plays from both teams and both the Bulldogs and the Missiles holding the lead at some point. Aquin held a slim 5-point lead as the teams headed to halftime but then came back re-focused and re-energized in the final two quarters to seize control of the game and...

  • Bulldog Blow Out

    Todd McKenna|Mar 31, 2021

The scoreboard at Freeport High School must hate to see the Aquin Bulldogs pay a visit because that means it's in for a long day of work. In the last two games the Bulldogs have had to play across town in the home of the Pretzels, Aquin has racked up 116 points. They tallied 55 points in their last game which was a playoff contest versus Fulton, and on Saturday with Rockford Christian Royal Lions as the opponent the Bulldogs (2-0) erupted for a 61-28 victory. In a sign of things to come, the...

  • Bulldogs Continue Playoff Run

    Todd McKenna|Nov 13, 2019

In order to go 11-0 teams have to get a few breaks and the Aquin Bulldogs needed every one they got Saturday to earn a playoff win 27-18 in Stockton. It was by no means a beauty contest for Aquin since it was ugly at times and much of that was due to the inspired play by the Blackhawks. But all season long when Aquin has needed to pull some magic, they turn to their playmakers and most every time they come up with another highlight reel effort to keep the chains moving - often resulting in...

  • Aquin Blows Off Steam In Win Over Fulton

    Todd McKenna|Nov 6, 2019

It seems weird to score 55 points and yet never feel that comfortable that would be enough for a win. That's the situation the Aquin Bulldogs found themselves in Saturday as they rolled up 55 points, but the Fulton Steamers kept coming back and scored 38 themselves. Still it was not enough as Aquin won to advance to next weekend and a rematch with Stockton. "We need to clean up some stuff on defense, but it's all about win and advance so we need to have a short memory especially in the playoffs," said Aquin Head Coach Broc Kundert after...

  • Aquin Finishes Perfect Season

    Todd McKenna|Oct 30, 2019

It took a little while, a gritty effort and a little luck at times but the Aquin Bulldogs capped off an eventful senior night with a 28-8 win against the West Carroll Thunder Friday night in Freeport. The Bulldogs soaked it all in as they walked off the field because they did so going 9-0 for the first undefeated season at Aquin in a long, long time. Quite a journey for a team that missed the playoffs last year as they navigated their way to a playoff berth and so much more in 2019. "We felt...

  • Welcome To The Big Boy Club

    Todd McKenna|Oct 23, 2019

For the first time in 5 years, the Aquin Bulldogs walked off the field Friday night as conference champions. They also are 8-0 for the first time since 2012 as they defeated the reigning state champion Forreston Cardinals 36-30 in a thriller that wasn't decided until the last minute of the game. The teams battled back and forth for the conference title as the Cardinals entered Conley Field in Freeport with a 6-1 record, key RB/LB Ethan Mulder returning after injury and in a sour mood after...

  • Bulldogs Step Up To Pass EPC Test

    Todd McKenna|Oct 9, 2019

It's probably safe to say the Aquin Bulldogs took the field Friday night in Pearl City with something to prove both to the NUIC community and even to themselves. Coming into the contest with a 5-0 record usually doesn't allow for doubt, but the Bulldogs, honestly, had not played the top level competition that the EPC Wildcatz would offer at their house on their homecoming night. Despite all that, Aquin left Pearl City with a convincing 34-27 win, smiles all around and knowing they belonged with the big boys both literally and figuratively. In...

  • Bulldogs Stay Undefeated

    Todd McKenna|Oct 2, 2019

Homecoming week brings enough distractions on its own, but then Friday's weather really upended the routine at Aquin as the Bulldogs (5-0) had to wait to Saturday to take the field against the Amboy Clippers. The results were apparent early, but the Bulldogs managed to steady themselves and post a 52-24 win that featured more than its share of twists and turns in Freeport. "It's nice to win with all the distractions this week," said Aquin Head Coach Broc Kundert. "A lot of little things we had to deal with and we definitely were not clicking...

  • Aquin Gets Defensive To Keep Win Streak Alive

    Todd McKenna|Sep 25, 2019

Forgive the Aquin Bulldogs if they seemed a little unsettled early in their game Friday, but they found themselves in an unfamiliar place. Like they have the past three weeks, the Bulldogs threw an opening scoring punch to get them going in the right direction towards another win, but this time the opponent punched back. Still, Aquin stood its ground and recovered using a 26-point second half to post their fourth win in a row 39-7 over the visiting East Dubuque Warriors. The Bulldogs marched 80...

  • Bulldogs Keep Pedal Down To Crush Missiles

    Todd McKenna|Sep 18, 2019

With a tough back end of the schedule, the Aquin Bulldogs realized how crucial wins in their first few games would be if they had playoff hopes this season. The results speak for themselves as Aquin has roared out of the gate as the Bulldogs now are 3-0 with a dominating performance in a 42-14 win in Milledgeville Friday night. Aquin overcame a shaky start as they fumbled the opening kickoff and the Missiles recovered the ball deep in Aquin territory. A quick score could have given Milledgeville some much-needed confidence as they have nine...

  • Bulldogs The New Power Team

    Todd McKenna|Sep 11, 2019

That is what some may call an "attention getter." If they hadn't done so already after last week's win, the Aquin Bulldogs Friday night made the rest of the NUIC conference sit up a little straighter and take notice as they posted another impressive victory 40-22 versus the visiting Stockton Blackhawks at Conley Field in Freeport. With only one quarter in the books, Aquin had rolled to a 20-0 lead before the sun even set. The Bulldogs were intent on establishing a running game after a sub-par...
